Comand/CD autochanger probs E320 (2001)

Have just bought my first MB - E320 Estate (2001) - v impressed, except with some electrical problems & aspects of MB servicing.
SatNav works a treat. CD in Comand works fine (for audio or navigation disk), but cannot get boot CD autochanger to be recognised by Comand (error message - 'No CD changer'). MB checked autochanger itself, and (I believe) the fibre-optic link & said that both were fine - charged £280 and it still it doesn't work.
They also assured me that the MB-fitted phone cradle was working - so bought appropriate Nokia (6210), but always get error message 'No phone'.
Any ideas, or should I just throw more money at MB servicing?
Thanks

Hi,

I don't know if this helps but I have a car kit in my E320 CDI (W211) which would appear to take a Nokia 6210 when it actually needs a Nokia 6310i. I have noth phones which look the same, but the 6310i works in the car and when I put the 6210 in I get the error you described above. I guess what I am saying is have you tried a 6310i phone instead?

I had an 03 W211 brought round with a fitted phone kit. Put my 6310i in the kit and it wouldn't recognise it. It seems it wanted a 6210 instead. I believe that the 6310i was supported from the time they introduced a swapable cradles. I believe, though not certain the W210 should work with a 6210 but as it doesn't recognise the cd changer either, I wonder whether there is a generic fault on the command or wiring.
Does the cradle charge the phone and does the phone recognise its in a cradle?

This is a world wide problem.Mercedes should be solving it in the next couple of months, by then your phone will have been updated and you start all over again.

Even Mercedes cant charge £280 to tell you they have fixed something that still doesnt work. go back and egt them to show you how they got it working. either its you and they will show you what you are doing wrong, or they havent fixed it in which case they should sort it for free as they have charged you already. Unless you have bust it doing something since.

Many thanks - tried the 6310i, as well - but it didn't work either. The manual only mentions upto, and including the 6210 & presumably predates the release of the 6310i. The MB service guys tell me that you can upgrade my phone unit to the 6310i (via some box in the boot) for just £230 - think I'll give it a miss! Particularly as they'd told me that the 6210 would work, and I purchased a new one - it didn't!

What's the problem? Not sure if the phone ever worked, as I bought the car secondhand. My guess is that it must have worked, but now there there is a problem. I really do fear either a wiring problem (likley v expensive) or a Comand module problem (v v v expensive).
How or what will MB be fixing?
Cheers,
D

I agree completely - I do, however, have to clarify matters a little. I bought the E32 0 from a (non-MB) dealer. As part of my 'package' I asked them to arrange both an MB Service for the car, as well as sort-out the CD autochanger (I have this in writing).
Initially, they took the car to a (non-MB) auto sound engineering company. They checked-over the autochanger (& even sent it away to be tested) & found no fault.
At this stage, the vendor (dealer) arranged for MB to look at things. They had told me that they were charged £280 by MB, but I suspect it might have been by the auto sound engineers with MB not charging. My vendor must be dreading potentially paying £2500 for a replacement Comand unit - not my problem!! Any ideas? Thanks, D

take it back. they said they found no fault and yet it doesnt work? is it meant to not work as standard do you think? ask them to show you how they got it working, if they said it was fine. something thats fine works. something that isnt fine doesnt!

CD changer "No CD"

This is a really annoying problem with the CD Changer.

Basically disconnect the Power lead and optic cable, take out the complete CD changer unit, pop the plastic slide off the top, with a small screw driver slowly move the CD cradle back to the in - out position.
Re-connect the power lead and optic cable, the unit will now work, add light grease to the gearing mechanism

Good Luck

I'm fascinated to hear this, but haven't yet had a chance to try it. The vendor (dealer) has now removed the Comand unit and has sent it away for testing/repair, but I'm not sure how successful/costly (to them) it will be. Ifear that there may welll be a Comand problems (as both the CD autochanger & phon don't work) but am not convinced that this will fix everything.
When I get the unit back I'll try your 'tip'. I'm not quite sure aht you mena by the 'in-out position' nad may have to come back to you about it.
Thanks, D

Thanks. What problem are you referring to that MB will fix? There seem to be quite a few!
Also, the TV does not work on my Comand. I'm not sure if it ever did (could it never have been enabled?), and I'm really not too bothered, but could this be a sign of a further problem with the Comand?
