Comand CD

I picked up my 03/2000 'W' E320 CDI Elegance saloon yesterday, 80K, FMBSH, immaculate tanzanite black, grey leather, £10,495, great car with lots of quirky extras (for an E class of that era) like electric folding side mirrors, electric blind in rear window, headlamp wash, electric front seats ... and COMAND which I have wanted for ages, complete with Nokia phone in front arm rest. But it is missing its navigator CD. We're trying to get it from the dealer, who may try to get it from the previous owner, but would I do better to get a more up-to-date CD, and if so what's the best way of going about that please?

While I'm on the topic, can I play DVDs on the COMAND? And there's a TV button - how can I watch TV on it (if that's what it means)? Sorry for naive questions but I know some of you guys are experts on these subjects & so I'm not afraid to ask ...

As you mention Navigation CD I am assuming its a DX based system, you can get these disks from teleatlas, the newer disks are worth it as the highways change alot in a year. If you do motoway driving get the TMC version (dynamic route - incase of hold ups you are re routed). The newer disks also support house numbers and postcodes. You can get them cheaper than teleatlas on ebay.
Check with your dealer the version of command you have and to be frank I would insist on them providing the latest disk.

Try a dvd in your system, if it wont play DVDs then its not a dvd based system. DVD based systems use navteq DVDs for navigation, with i believe the disk going in the boot.

If you have a TV button, just press it and the TV will come on, if it doesnt you dont have a TV tuner (about an extra 1.5K option)

hope that helps

I'm fairly sure the Command circa 2000 was CD based. Your Command will most likely not play DVD's, even if it did they only play when the car is not moving on the screen in the front, same for the TV if the tuner is fitted.
As for folding mirrors, I believe thery were standard on Elegance and Avantgarde.
Headlight washers standard. Partial electric seats also standard (up, Down, and seat back tilt), but manual to slide front and back. Do you have the memory buttons on the doors? if so they were an expensive but very nice option. If you do have the memory seats when you leave the mirror adjustment switched to the passenger side when you select reverse the passenger door mirror dips so you can see the kerb. If you don't want it to dip just select the drivers mirror with the switch instead.
You should also have rain sensing wipers and auto-dimming rear view and drivers door mirror.
Good luck with the car :D

Hope your all ok, had a good friend in Canada hit a deer coming home, first thing he knew about it the airbags went off. Thankfully he was OK but the car cost $8,000 to fix.

Hello FWB44. I went through a similar experience as you when I got my CLK230 earlier this year. Came without the CD in the COMAND unit. The dealer did not advertise it had COMAND and said they could not verify it it had navigation capability (a ploy to avoid investing in the CD me thinks). A very kind member from this forum forwarded a back level TELE ATLAS CD to verify the unit was OK, which it was. Then I picked up an unused 2004/2005 edition on EBay for around £50. Just keep looking on Ebay, I am sure you could do better than me. Brand new the cheapest seem to be around £90.

Have fun its a great feature to have.

Thanks, we're all fine, and it must have been a munjack (?sp.) deer because the damage was all below the front bumper, mainly to the radiators (now I know there are three of them) and the crossmember, bent well back. Who ever had the bright idea of importing those darned critters from China? Now they're no better than vermin, chewing up people's gardens and bending cars all over the place. The oddest thing was the arrival shortly afterwards of three jobsworths in an 'Incident Support' vehicle with yellow flashing lights all over it, who cross-questioned me for 15 minutes as to the whereabouts of the deer as if I'd got the damned thing trussed up in the boot ready to turn into venison steaks!

... its not just the big ones that do the damage! A pheasant took out my RS Turbo... Theres a straight road, A66 I think, to Carlisle, late for Skiing at Aviemore, so was flooring the Turbo, Pheasant up ahead starts to walk across the road, I thought it would get across before I reached it, but no, the darn critter turned and headed straight for me, it was real life 'chicken'. Doing the speed I was, I couldnt swerve, so we hit head on, feathers, blood everywhere. When I got out, I checked the car, bumper etc was damaged and caked in remains of a proud Pheasant, but other than that, I thought Id escaped. A short while later, heading up a steep incline, slow cars in front, I floored it, just passed the last car, then their was one almighty bang, thick black smoke belowing out, couldnt see, but remembering that there was snow on the embankment, threw the car onto the roadside. About a minute later, cars I'd passed drove passed, as they could only just start to see. The Pheasant had got its revenge, the Turbo had blown due to oil line fracturing, disintegrated and blown the engine! As women keep on telling me, its not size that counts :p

Just received the missing CD from the dealer after repeated requests, it turns out to be M-B Navisys Harman/Becker Navtech Europa 2004 Version 3.0 so looks pukka enough ... will plug and play when I get car back from bodyshop & let you know

I don't think the Version 3.0 has DTF (deer tracking facility) so pls take care when following the directions ;)

Your comand is a CD based system which will show DVD's if you add a DVD player to it! Ditto TV with a suitable TV tuner. The navigation is entirely Cd based and there is no facility to watch DVD's or TV without additional components.

Thank you, that explains it all perfectly, now I know what to do ;-)

I would really like to get my hands on TMC and the features mentiones in another thread about the TeleAtlas CD but on looking at my Sat Nav box in the boot it appears to be DVD ROM are there any suitable upgrades for this I think I have the latest from MB but it doesn't have TMC or even recognise the M6 Toll Road

The latest disks are TMC enabled for the uk. Latest versions are Version 5.0 for E/CL/S/SL/SLK/CLS and Version 6.1 for A/B/C/CLK/ML/GL/R Please note that there is a version 5 for the A/B/C class, however this does not have TMC. UK dealers may have problems getting the 6.1, but it is available in the German market.

CD or DVD?

I too bought a year 2000 - S500 - with command and no disk. I understood that this older version ran on a CD rather than a DVD. I need a disk but all the ones on Ebay say they are DVD which I presume wont work ( CD slot in command unit - audio CD changer in boot) The unit tells me there is 'no CD' not 'no DVD' The command does have TV. It is also missing the mibile phone - it does have a black socket on the end of a wire and an aerial co-ax lead in the centre armrest, what phone do I need to get this working with the command and wheel controls? Thanks.

Actually the latest version for E/CL/S/SL/SLK/CLS is Version 5.1 many dealers are doing a free upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1

The latest version for the others is 6.3 which is available in limited numbers. The dealers are giving out 6.1 with most new cars and some offer 6.2 also. I have 6.3 in my car ;)
