In the E350 Comand manual I have come across the phrase 'Not supported in all countries'. Is there somewhere a list of what actually is supported in each country, in particular in the UK, eg TMC (for dynamic routing), WAP, Teleaid, etc?

I beleive the TNC licence issues have been sorted now.

Last I heard, Classic FM are broadcasting these signals.

If you have the software installed, it should be working.

Tmc

I have a brand new E Class with Comand and the current DVD, but the TMC function is not yet activated.

Believe that this is a transmission rather than MB issue (the BMW I've just got rid of had the same issue) and I've read somewhere that it should be 'live' by the autumn of this year.

I don't think it's a transmission issue. There are other makes of car that do receive TMC in the UK, via Classic FM. MB has only just sorted out the licence, and a new DVD, with TMC enabled, is expected "soon", according to my dealer.
As you say, the current 4.1 does not support TMC in the UK.

TMC is being broadcast by classic FM in the UK, however DaimlerChrysler have only just signed the agreement with ITIS for the use of their data. Work is currently progressing on deploying new software to include the TMC codes into the navigation software. Trials are currently being carried out, and the system should go live later this year. It will mean upgrading your navigation disks to enable this function. Suggest release dates are October this year, depending on how well the trials are going. An article was included in the May issue of the Mercedes magazine.

TMC, WAP and TeleAid

Thanks for the clarification regarding TMC.
Would there be a charge for the new DVD?

Can anybody clarify the status of WAP support and TeleAid for me in the UK?

there will definately be a charge for it. unless you were lucky enough to sign and agreement that says they will upgrade it free when it comes out. anybody ordering a new car with COMAND should insist it is upgraded, when it comes out, free of charge. but if you havent now it will be money to MB. at least they will upgrade the map to the latest edition as well.

Do we know anything about these trials? It sounds a little odd to me: the current v4.1 DVD already has TMC enabled for other countries in Europe, so what is so difficult about enabling it for the UK, now that the contract has been signed?

Re charging: if you wait a little, you ought to be able to pick up a DVD on eBay for under < 50 quid. MB will probably charge 300-400.

There is nothing strange about it. TMC is present for other countires however from what i understand it does not have good coverage. ITIS in the UK provides the UK data, and TMC code data and "paths" have to be added into the teleatlas mapping data. Although teleatlas already provide a generic DVD for the Comand system (Blaupunkt units only - ie COmand DX 2) which has TMC enabled - this can be purchased NOW from teleatlas website (approx £160), the later units, especially those in the W203 C Class are now made by Harman Becker who currently have no TMC enabled software in the UK. I guess they are carrying out extensive trials to ensure that when the system is released it is accurate and reliable. Its not a case of just adding a file to the disk with the codes in.

Thats not entirely true. The C203 comand unit (harman becker) version 2.1 disk was supplied with navteq maps. The version 4.1 upgrade uses teleatlas mapping data. Due to the unit not being blaupunkt, the generic teleatlas dvd with tmc is not compatible

Just a note,
The H.B NTG2 (203,209,169) unit uses Teleatlas ( current Version 4.0)
The H.B NTG1 (171,211,220,215,230) unit uses Navteq ( Current Version 4.1).

But true, the original NTG 2 discs were navteq upto to version 3.

Keep Smiling
