Hi,

Car is an 2001 S Class W220 320L. My comand has failed but it is really weird. I cannot get the radio, CD, Navi or linguatronic to work or switch on. The screen is dead. However when I plug in my telephone the dash computer shows it on standby.

If I get a call or I call out the screen powers up and it all seems to work, the comand screen comes on I can move around the cd change change the radio liguatronic works. There is no sound though cos the phone is working and auto mute works!

When I end the call the comand goes off again. I can hear the radio for about1 second whilst it all switches off. The nect call I make it all switches on again. Any techie thoughts out there.

There are no other problems dash computer is fine, speedtronic works, etc.

I had my COMAND switched off and my phone in the cradle. a call came and it powered up the COMAND for the duration of the call.

I assume they have more than one power input to allow this. I think a trip to the dealers to find the fault maybe the answer.

Yes but how much do they want  If there are 2 powers sources I guess i have to check the fuses. I have looked at 2 fuses that show for that area 61 & 63. Are there any others I should be checking?

It could be a relay and the common relay could be the phone relay for the Nokis 6310i that i have fitted. Anybody any ideas?

These things have not used relays for years, its all logic solid state switching.

I also think that you will find that there is only one power unit, and this does the logic switching from device to device.

Mine (in a W203) doesn't do that. And if I turn COMAND off with the phone in the cradle then it turns the phone off.

I think on reading all this an update is the order of the day, its a software update that most MB garages do free.

Malcolm,

Thanks for the input. I have the latest disk for this at home. Question is how do I do it if the comand will not power up except when the phone is working?

Yep know all about solid state etc Microelectronics HNC lying somewhere around the house  but I use the relay word cos thats how it works in principle. I think it could be a failure within the 6310i ECU either sofware or duff connection. I suppose I could disconnect it, reconnect it and see if it releases a state that is being held by the standby power. My thought process is that the phone works when the ignition is off so something may be locking it up and disconnecting may reboot it!

Thoughts?

Anything digital can lock up and freeze, sometimes leaving part of system ok.
You could put the CD in and do a power up then, it could start, worth a thought,

Malcolm

The dealers have a special disc for this purpose

Nope did not work. Disconnected the telephone ECU fuses and tried the reboot it is not playing. Looks like a visit to a dealer. I did hear of a Mercedes specialist in the Birmingham area who services etc. Any idea who it is?

All fixed. :D sticky on switch on the console. It was stuck in the off position but you would not know it by looking at it cos you just push it and it turns it on or off with no click or anything.

My friendly local car electrician took about 4 minutes to find and sort it out!

He suggested I get a new one cos it may happen again. :(

Good ere innit!

If it works leave it, if the is no click, that means it is a tactile type switch or logic, put it down to one of those things, as I doubt if it is faulty.
