I’ve just taken delivery of a c class sport in the UK with the “new” comand unit.

Everything is fine and it seems to be an improvement on the old unit. (I can now watch DVDs).
The only problem is I can’t load any music into the music register from CDs as when I follow the instructions in the hand book the menu options on the display are “greyed out” and won’t select.

Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance

Andy.

I had the same problem, and have now managed to sort out how to do it.

I tried iTunes but could not get it to work, so tried Windows Media Player, and that works.

Windows Media Player.

1. Create a playlist of all the albums you want to use (I selected about 2.9GB of tunes).
2.Click burn and select data CD or DVD. Then select more options. I selected medium speed and for format M3U, then ticked 'do not convert'.
3. Insert a writable DVD and wait for it to be recognised, might need to delete the pop-up notice.
4. Once recognised click the 'burn disk' in the bottom lefthand corner and wait until all files are written and disk finalised.
5. Thats the disk ready to install in the car.

1.Load disk in any vacant slot.
2. Select changer.
3. Select music register.
4. Select music register again in the new window.
5. Select copy files, options will be all music or any of the albums listed.
6. Select continue.
7. Select start.
8. Wait patiently for tunes to transfer ( my 2.9GB took an hour to finish transferring).
10. That's it, hope this is of use to someone. Any questions please PM me or reply to forum.

DRM or music protection, napster and Itunes put protection on the music files and it makes it difficult to use the WMA files on other devices, google a bit of software called analogwhole it removes the protection on music and allows it to be used on other devices, if you cant find it I can email it to you, its free to download and use, very good also.

Sorry jibcl500, thinking about what you said about music protection, very helpfull but that was not the problem in this instance.

The problem I, and it seems others had, involved getting music files onto the Music Register on the HDD in the latest COMAND disk in a W204. Having managed to solve this problem I explained what I did to help others who might have been having similar difficulties.

I had the same problem and it was so frustrating. I couldn't download Windows Media Player so just tried iTunes; burned a "data" DVD. I put it in my GL550, selected Music Register, then Music Register again and "Copy Files" was available to me for the first time! Thank you SO much.

Post thought - it would be nice if Mercedes told us how to do it. The service centre in two dealers could not tell me the solution!

Loading music

Thats interesting, I have a sept 2007 220 with comand and I thought you could only load from an SD card in a PCIMA card which I was told today by my local MB dealer its unavailable now?? so I can also load via CD? if so I shall get cracking. My BMW USB was much much simpler

You wont have music register on a 2007 car. Only for MY09> Comand units.

PCMCIA Card reader problem

Just thought I would share this with you guys.
About 18 months ago, I bought the MB PCMCIA kit (£45) from MB Milton Keynes. The kit consisted of Card reader, 2GB Sandisk & keyring holder for Sandisk. Simply copied ".mp3" files to Sandisk, and uploaded to car's hard disk no problem UNTIL a couple of weeks ago when COMAND refused to recognise anything on the card reader.
Enquired about a new kit, but was told that MB now only supply the Card reader, and at a cost of £57!
Outrageous!
Went onto eBay and purchased a Card reader for £1.99 (postage £2.50!) and hey presto - everything is fine again.
Not sure what caused the MB Card reader to pack up, but £57 for this item is extortionate.

Follow up Jan 2011 yes I did have a 4 gig Music register on a 2007 car W204 and I loaded it first via DVD but now have a PCMIA card to do it. It takes more music than I need, and its worked fine so cant see me ever using the CD player again

later W204 cars have a 6 gb music register, plenty as Ive never filled my 4gb

I just got a 2012 ML and have the same problem. I had a 2009 ML that was super easy to fill with music. I used an SD card and uploaded from there. The 2012 only lets you use CD's, which is complete crap, especially since it says in the manual you can use SD cards and/or the USB Port.

It seems like they could do an easy software patch to fix this issue.
