Command display failure: S320 CDI, 2007

A recently purchased S320 CDI. The command display screen has failed. Replaced with a 'used serv' unit of the same number, same year donor car. Still not working.
Queries: Does it need reprograming into the car system? All fuses have been checked, none broken. Is there another item failure in the system? Have we switched it off somewhere?
The Instrument cluster seems fully functional from the steering wheel buttons, though the control panel between the 2 has no functions except for the vehicle level change function.
Any ideas out there. Can someone test the Control panel for correct function out of the car?
