Hello,
My dad bought an E350 2012 CDI Sport edition 125 on 17k earlier this year in February. Upon buying the car we quickly realised that the COMMAND toggle wasn't responsive (rotating it/moving the toggle would intermittently work, but mainly completely unresponsive). This seemed to be a fairly known issue. We took the car back to the dealer asking for them to fix the problem.
The dealer asked us to take the car to Mercedes for diagnostics and a quote to fix the issue. Mercedes told us that it was a problem with the toggle and quoted us 2900£. As a side note - we paid for the diagnostics after being told that we would be reimbursed, which we haven't. The dealer then told us that he could fix the problem themselves in house, so they ordered the part. I suspect it wasn't an OEM part. They then told us that there was a problem with the main display unit and it was blank (possibly because it is an OEM display system trying to communicate with a pattern part?). They then told us that they were sending the screen to get "remapped" to work with the command unit.
This is what we've been told is the problem - but I have no experience with Mercedes and I would like a proper understanding of the problem, as it looks like it may get difficult with the dealer. The screen has been off for "remapping" for about a month now, and I think we are getting fobbed off. As a result my dad has written a letter to the dealer stating the car is not fit for purpose, and as this has been going on for months, he wants a date that the problem will be fixed. We still haven't had any response to that letter.
Ideally, he doesn't want to return the car, he just wants it to work. I currently see the outcomes (in order of my dads preference) as
1) Dealer fixes the problem themselves and all is well (looking less and likely)
2) Dealer offers a sum back to my dad, i would have thought this needs to be 2900£ - but I would like your opinions on this.
3) We return the car.
Any thoughts as to what the problem is, the likelihood of a successful "remapping" etc would be appreciated.
