I have a problem with the Command Unit on a 2001 CL500.

I have recently lost all sound out-put. This occured when I was using the radio. On switching to the CD player the Command screen showed a message to the effect that "no CD changer is fitted." A similar message appeared when pressing the cassette player button.

I was told by the local dealer that there might be a fault in the fibre optic cable linking the CD changer to the Command unit and I therefore asked them to do a diagnostics check. This appeared to show no faults in the wiring and I have been told that a new Command unit will be required !!!!

The sat nav works fine (except there is no sound) Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Can it be fixed and if so who should I contact?

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear about your COMAND problems. Here are a couple of links to people that may be able to help you out.

www.comand.co.uk

www.mercupgrades.com

You can generally buy second hand units on "e" bay for a fraction of the price that MB charge

Are you the same David Flowers who works for the Post Office?

Steve

sound

Hi

has you car got optional sound system ? if so could just be a fuse or fibre optic lead or any control unit on the optic loop or a wake up fault to any unit

Thanks Steve and Piestore,

The car is fitted with a bose sound system, and it was my first reaction that the problem would be with the amplifier. Would the dealer's diagnostic check have picked this up?

Not sure where the amp is located...........
I know where the three standard fuse boxes are , is there likely to be a separate fuse for the amp?

One possible thing to try is a service software reset, the dealers have a upgrade CD that it put into the unit, the comand unit is then put into the service mode, once set up it takes 40 mins to upgrade.
The fault is not in the power Bose amp, it is in the head unit, if the software upgrade does not fix it, the fault will be in the Cmos function switching chip.
You could try the people below, they are becker service agents.

I have managed to find my way into the hidden diagnosic screens in the COMAND unit and it is showing three faults:

The first ( ref: N1112) indicates no data transfer between D2B master and D2B predecessor component possible -- this is shown as an Active fault with a count of 35.

The second(ref:n1111/190) shows no data transfer between D2B master ans D2N component. The CD changer reports a fault in the D2B ring - Prevoius fault with a count of 8

The third error message (ref:B1769/10) shows internal traffic data memory fault in communication with CTEL or Teleaid.

the D2B Companents screen shows that the unit is confiured for COAND, Digital BOSE AMP and CD changer but only the COMMAND is actually found on the fibre optic bus

Not sure where I go from here?????????????

As I said earlier, try an software update with CD Number 215 589 00 22 00.
You could also try an auto reset by disconnecting power for 5 mins.

It would need a total disconnect of both the + live and the memory back up.
your unit is not coded (once from new) so no problem there, Its easier to disconnect battery, sometimes this works, but cost nothing to try, if nothing here suggested works, these things are worth repairing, I used to do it once.

command fault

HI

Still sounds like a d2b (fibre optic) fault or wake up fault to me, the dealer should be able to diagnose, but its not a difficult system to sort by leaving out items from the loop, first of all check the wake up signal blue black wire to each component ( comes from command to :- cd changer, bose amp, ctel and voice control) this wire should have 12v present at all times , at switch on it drops to about 6 volts three times for a split second you realy need a scope to see the signal properly but a digital mulimeter will fluctuate at switch on. If this signal is OK to all (and it must be all) units on the loop then you have a D2B fault its usually a faulty unit remove the D2B lines (orange fibre optic lines) from each unit in turn (not command) remove them from the plastic plug and join them together via a small piece of rubber hose until you get some functionalitie back. In my experience CD changer or Ctel are the most likley suspects

command navigation repair

I had a problem with my command unit. It didn't work and replacing it was very expensive. I found this company fixes only Mercedes electronic parts. I took out the unit and shipped it to him. Turn around time and cost was not bad at all. Take a look..
