A cautionary tale if your buying concrete for that new swish garage you have always promised yourself or the new extension you want.

We have had a number of so-called "spotmix" type deliveries recently for various reasons, they barrow it in and you get the exact amount you want for smaller jobs.
Typically in 1-5 cubic metre loads.

The problem is in what's in it, which can be demolition waste, everything from concrete to brick, glass, plastic, electrical fittings or just about anything from a building that gets demolished.

Just brick and concrete is not a great problem for many purposes but as my picture shows the other stuff can be in it,

2 payments one for gettin rid of demolishion waste and 2 selling it to you . Thing is your delivery should give the strength of concrete based on cube tests and I doubt you will get a decent cube strength with mix full of rubbish ask for the stated strength and if need be the lab report. And or go somewhere else. Sounds like a sort of fly tipping!

That’s an interesting type of recycling which needs to be carefully regulated - I hope. I’m terribly suspicious of any type of construction material nowadays with good cause it would seem

It's not really 20mm aggregate. It's not even good hardcore if it's in a big lump.
Tis fraud.

This was from an established supplier of many years standing.

Luckily we know what were doing and for many purposes it will suffice but for some it certainly will not.

I guess their profits are down. like most.
Let's hope they don't use sand from a farmers field to save a few bob.

Great spot and thank you sharing as I’m planning an extension!

Sadly nothing is immune to fraud/corruption.

Most people don't check, they just think concretes concrete or that old chestnut "you get what you pay for"

Well exactly it what we pay “professionals” for and expect them to deliver what they say they will.

I had my driveway done and they put mot type 1 on the receipt but it was in fact reclaimed mot type 1 according to a nosy engineer who lives opposite. Needless to say it’s sunk a little in places and they will be back to fix.

I knew I should have supplied all materials myself….

I’m debating about going on a brick laying course so that I can build my own extension as sadly, tradesmen of late (even expensive ones even) have left a lot to be desired!

Thats absolute shocking OP. There is nothing concrete about that looking at the colour let alone the content (no aggregate at all) just junk. That will crumble like a biscuit in a year.
I would be onto trading standards.

I am sorry but when you say for many purposes it will suffice, thats not on. You ordered concrete not biscuits •.

When i worked as a Redy Mix driver .A guy would follow us around taking samples of the concrete, and numbering them up so they could be tested at the company for its srength . I never knew rubble in the mix went on . And it is not lawful . May be a jack the lad . But when i built my drive i filled it half way with concrete and then we put bricks , bits of steel , even bike frames in there Screenshot 2021-09-06 at 10-08-12 1960 Foden Mickey Mouse Cabbed Mixer.png and wheels ,to stop it cracking .Then ,finished off by filling it up with concrete and used a glass bottle to make a rain channel so water would drain away.

clarkmichigan55b I do remember the trucks you speak of . . First Foden i had to use was built on a steel chassis and the cab was wooden oak frame , clad with aluminium . It had an 8 yard drum ..That truck ended up down the side of a steep bank at the rear end of MerryHill shpping centre ..Foud to expensive to reclaim it , so it was left there ..But the mechanic would climb up to get spares off it from time to time .. Made a bit of cash driving these mixers ,,but paid for it not long after . The police found concrete evidence lol
