today's was the first time I ever bothered to change an oil filter on a Merc

Using a genuine filter from main dealer - I found

1) the hideous design fault of a 3/4 liter empty bucket for each start up seems an extraordinarily mad feature that can only cause damage on each start up, whereas on proper cars the filter can be fitted full and of course remains full when its off?
2) the big O ring was so baggy its looked like it wanted to end up in the wrong place screwing it back together, even though lubed to fit and lubed the lip on the engine casting
3) the idea that it only fits one way round was intriguing - what possible difference is there ?

There is a one way valve in the filter housing that prevents drain back. When you remove the filter it opens and drain the contents back into the sump.

I guess that's why it's always wet, even if left for a while before changing.

The 642 has a internal lip that holds 200ml or so as well, worth sucking that out too :)

They disappear either way round, you just have to press the filter hard onto the housing.
