Hi - does the gearbox in my W126 300se start off in second gear the same as my old W124 300te unless you manually shift or really floor it?. According to Wikipedia this gearbox was fitted to the 260 but does'nt state whether it was fitted to the 300 or not. I am ony getting two gear changes i.e. I thought it was changing from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. Now I am not so sure that it's not going 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. If I am not reaching fourth this would explain the higher fuel consumption over the W124 (see my other thread). It pulls about 2500 rpm at 60 on a flat road if this is any help. Thanks.

Yes you are correct, its a kickdown to first.

The change up shift points are higher in S, the down shift holds also.

And yes the cars are high geared making them a little thirsty
