My daughter in law just emailed me about that, seems someone she knows went to the Tesco petrol station here in Watford and her fuel was contaminated and it allegedly cost her £400 to get it fixed

I nearly always use Tesco because A) it's cheap and B) I get reward points, but in the last few weeks my journey hasn't taken me anywhere near one (other than Cobham at the GTG on Saturday of course). I think I'll give tehm a miss for a couple of weeks.

I thought enthanol petrol was only available in the USA. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop using Shell.

The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and fuel additive. The largest national fuel ethanol industries exist in Brazil (gasoline sold in Brazil contains at least 20% ethanol and hydrous ethanol is also used as fuel).[11] One method of production is through fermentation of sugar. Ethanol creates very little pollution when burned. Millions more acres of land are needed if ethanol is to be used to replace gasoline. Pure ethanol has a lower energy content than gasoline (about 30% less energy per unit volume).[12] At gas stations, ethanol is contained in a mix of ethanol and gasoline, otherwise known as gasohol. In the United States, the color yellow (symbolizing the color of corn) has become associated with the fuel and is commonly used on fuel pumps and labels.

According to the Renewable Fuels Association, as of November 2006; 107 grain ethanol biorefineries in the United States have the capacity to produce 5.1 billion gallons of ethanol per year. An additional 56 construction projects underway (in the U.S.) can add 3.8 billion gallons of new capacity in the next 18 months. Over time, it is believed that a material portion of the ~150 billion gallon per year market for gasoline will begin to be replaced with fuel ethanol. [2] Growth in fuel ethanol in the United States is largely being driven by financial incentives that naturally exist when oil prices are over a certain level, as ethanol typically costs under $1.50 per gallon to manufacture (of course this is sensitive to corn prices) and is exempt from the $0.52 per gallon federal gasoline tax. However, the United States RFS (renewable fuel standard) requires that 4 billion gallons of "renewable fuel" be used in 2006 and this requirement will grow to 7.5 billion gallons per annum by 2012.[3].

We are lucky that we have a Jet garage quite close by, so we always go there. My father used to be Transport Manager for Jet/Conoco for years and he always used to tell me not to buy supermarket petrol.

I always use my independent garage down here, as Tesco is extremely pricey for petrol in cornwall

Anybody had some of the dodgy petrol?

I was wondering if anyone has had problems after filling their cars up at either Morrisons or Tescos? Anyone had a batch of the bad petrol as seen on the news?

I use Morrisons and Tescos regularly. I did notice about two weeks ago when filling in Morrisons in Carlisle that my car engine was running rougher but I put it down to water or something in their petrol at that station. I think Carlisle is out of the area where the bad petrol is supposed to have been delivered to though.

I have had no such problems with Morrisons and Tesco in Dumfries who I usually use.

Anyone know where Tescos and Morrisons actually get their petrol? I thought it all came out of the few refineries in the UK.

A chap on the BMW forum I use filled up his new Z4M with dodgy fuel from a BP garage. Luckily for him BP accepted full responsibility and paid for his engine and fuel system to be fixed saving him many '000s.

There was a guy on BBC news this morning with an S500, new O2 sensor and a new MAS was on the invoice and his bill was just over £1K.

I've been reliably informed that they now suspect the contamination to be caused by too much creosote, which is an additive in the fuel apparently. This is now fouling the injectors, causing the whole engine to run extremely lean which in turn causes the oxygen sensor to fail

So who's safe to buy off then?

The reports I've read are mainly related to supermarkets (Tesco & Morrisons)

Would BP be OK? got one of those by me, but not much else apart from the aforementioned.

Been lucky in that I've been mostly working from home, so not put any in for a couple of weeks.

Don't fancy it going TU when I do, and can only leave it another couple of days :(

the reports are saying it's only Tesco and Morrisons but to be honest I would think that anyone who's car misbehaves over the next couple of weeks will blame the fuel now. It's a good story so the press have jumped on it but I wonder how many (if any) are genuinely to do with the fuel

I struggle to see how dodgy petrol could cause damage to the air mass sensor. O2 sensor possibly but not the MAS.

Reading the BBC site, it's amazing how many people have suffered from this and the stories are borderline funny!
"I had a misfire last year and they replaced a sensor - must be the fuel" yeah right ...
