I have just bought an 04 plated E-220 CDI automatic estate, does using the sport or convenience mode in gear selection make much difference in fuel consumption?

No, none at all, in my experience.

It's more relaxed in C mode but makes no difference to economy

My handbook says "C" is "Comfort"

C is "comfort" forcing the box to set off in second gear and upchange at lower revs. I too find no difference in fuel consumption between the settings, but it's a much more responsive and "sporty" drive in "S".

Odd - I do find a difference. On a run it won't affect anything but around town, the fact that it sits in 2nd and seems to allow the revs to fall off more quickly (less engine braking) gives me an extra couple of mpg.

I use C as I find it gives a little better fuel economy. I did put it in S yesterday and the S500 that was in front of me couldn't get away...
