Dear all

Do not shout at me, but I have a non-mercedes car problem!

Over the weekend I opened the stable and tried to put in action the 'winter stored car' a Porsche Carrera 4 Convertible (2001) 911 (996) the battery was flat, after charging and trying to put the top down problems arose.

The car drives, however, the roof will not go down (dare not go over 30mph), and is stuck slightly open. The bonnet will not open, the rear windows are stuck fully down, the speedo does not work or the rev counter, also there is no signal coming off the fob key (battery ok)....any advise anyone please (or is it main dealer)??

Kindest

sounds like a sam unit issue. You could try a reset - dis the battery for 30 mins or so and try again. It may have got itself in a mess with the initial low voltage. Failing that I think you'll be visiting the dealer.

Thanks for the reply jberks

Today I found the emergency bonnet release (3 hours looking) after calling Porsche, who said where it was...it was under the drivers wheel arch plastic shroud, and the tiniest bit of wire imaginable. After many hours looking everywhere, I found what appears to be a 'mouse nest' in the bulkhead area passenger side, near lots of wires....tired now, and in need of a bottle of Merlot, also a bit of skirt is coming round, quite a tidy piece!

Dear jberks

Thought I would give you an update.

After a number of days with the help of 3 Indies in a row (garages side by side), the hood now operates. We found a broken wire behind/under the dash that a mouse must have chewed through, the little thing must have chewed elsewhere too, however, it is most difficult to find and must also be behind/under the dash somewhere!

A mouse used to live in the V of the camshaft covers on my fathers XJ6. It made a nest out of the under bonnet insulation. Possibly a sibling of that mouse made a nest in the wing of my brothers MGB GT and ate through most of the wiring.
My neighbours New S type died driving back from Scotland after a mouse had eaten through some wires. A lot to be said for cats :)

When I was about 12 I fitted a radio cassette to my brother in laws new chrome bumper MGB GT, later that day there was a dashboard fire and the whole loom had to be replaced ( a fortune at the time), what were they doing allowing a 12 year old mess with cars!

I had to chuckle at that! When I was 13/14 my dad bought me a Mk1 Escort to drive in some fields. I think he intended it to be my first road car too, but I thought it would be a good idea to strip out the interior and then burn it. I must have thought I was Tony Pond/Markku Alen/Henri Toivenen so wanted to reduce any fire risk if I rolled it!

Needless to say, my old man was unimpressed!

(Sorry for the off-thread post!)

You mean like when I was 19 years old with this MK7 Jaguar and I had this date with this fantastic chick who lived out in the country. the moon was shining over this little lane and the road appeared to go straight on, alas the moon masked the hair pin bend and the dip, I took off, flew over the hedge into this ploughed field and spent hours driving over the field to find a gate.

I never saw her again, shame, she was nice and all that one could wish for at 19 years old. :( :(

Its a good idea to set mouse traps in the garage, especially from October till March ( mice come in for shelter then )

A mouse chewed through most of my SAAB 900 wiring years ago.

Those were the days Malcolm.

My second car (first a Vauxhall Firenza £130) was a Triumph Herald, which, had the most rotten chassis ever, it swayed from side to side each time I changed gear. I recall one day I was with Phillipa (the best girl in town) and driving out of a multi storey car park, as we were going down floor by floor a car to my left (2 lanes) wanted to race so I obliged. Each time I changed gear to keep up with him the car swayed from left to right and each time the rear end hit the wall and the central crash barriers! Phillipa was frightened!

Some months later I was alone and it finally dropped to the floor whilst driving. Luckily I was able to park it at the side of the road outside a house. As I was about to walk home, penniless and with no car, a man came out of the house and asked what the problem was. He said he needed a project and gave me £100 and a gold pocket watch for the car. I bought an Automatic Volvo 144 with the money (thrashed it for two years, never spent a penny on it) and still have the watch!

Fun times to look back on...
