Converting manual Pagoda to auto ?

I am still looking for a Pagoda SL to buyin the UK, if anyone knows of one let me know, having declined to view any of the cars for sale with manual transmission.

However I think now I will have to consider a manual one as I'm running out of time and need to consider ALL cars I come across.

So the question is can I fit, at a later date, an auto trans to a previously manual car? Is it possible, I assume I need the gearbox, flywheel, gearlever.......what else ?

Has anyone done this?

Somebody told me that Merc motors were basically the same right up to about 1980 so could I stick in a later one c/w auto without too much hassle ?

What about power steering, can it be fitted?

Any advice at all would be welcome !

I have (with a lot of help!) converted 2 cars from manual to auto in the past, it can be done no problem, just dont do what i did and totally forget that you need a new pedal cluster as well! The cars were a Rover SD1 Vanden Plas and a good old Sierra, there were no massive hitches, just be very methodical with what you are doing. Mercedes may be another deal totally though, Andy or David are the best people to answer on hear i would think.
