The Bmw in my opinion shades the Merc. The depreciation on the ford will take its toll, though they are a good car & underated.

I'd go with the what's on the clock either the Merc or the BM.

I don't understand why you would need to ask other people this question in the first place?

Your choice of car is a personal thing. If you want a Ford, buy one. If you want a Mercedes, buy one. It's easy! If you want a BMW (yeugh), buy one.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I thought my diesel had done low mileage (30K and it's 3yrs old - my job changed), but that BMW is really low ay 29K on a 5 yr old car.
A colleague of mine has one of that kind of age, and it really is a very nice car - I particularly notice how good the ride is - I find my C270 to be disappointing in that respect. It is an estate (so maybe different to the saloon), and an Avantgarde (but C Classes are supposed to be same suspension), but it's only on 16" wheels.

Hi all,

BMW 530DSE 29000 Miles 02 plate no warranty £12995
What do you think?

The 530 is a different beast to the C270 much more grunt but, if you want to pay £20K and want a Merc diesel on a par with the 530, go for C320CDI or an E320 CDI, theres plenty of the latter from dealers at much less than the price you quoted above (£20K for a 270 seems a bit strong)

The BM offers much more car for your money than the C-class. The Ford (I think) is overpriced.

I have never driven a BM before but they can't be all that bad ( they keep trouncing the equivalent mercs in most car reviews)

I will now stand back and await the inevitable avalanche of abuse ... :)

As someone who moved from BMW to Merc I can add a bit more.

The 530 will be more car for the money and will be made of higher quality materials but this is right because you're comparing the small family saloon with BMW's medium saloon. A better comparison would be a E320 CDI.

Just a few more points:

The Ford will give you all the toys and will be the cheapest to run. It will handle reasonably well. On the minus side, it's FWD, the interior will feel more plasticky than the other two, it's no good if you're a 'badge snob' and will depreciate more than the other two.

The C270 is very overpriced IMHO but is an MB, is nicely put together and will feel a better place to be, relatively cheap to run / maintain (but not as cheap as the Ford, natch). The 5 cylinder has lots of go but is quite unrefined (and does a good impression of a V8 at full revs). Handling will not be as good as the other two (even if it's an Avantgarde) but it will waft you along motorways at 70mph with no fuss whatsoever. A C270CDI will hold it's value really well as it's a desirable model come sell-on time, even with a newer model on the market, (parked up at the dealers on Saturday, mine could have sold several times ;))

The BMW is bigger, may have more toys and will be a lot quicker than the other two and probably return an mpg on a par with the C270. It will feel 'sportier' as that's the market BMW aim at but at speed will be a good cruiser but not as 'floating on air' that MB gives you. It will depreciate more than the C270CDI, even though it drinks from the dirty pump because bigger saloons are less appealing as they get older.

Oh and in my experience, I found the MB warranty (inc Mobilo Life) to be a better deal than BMWs.

Personally I rate the E39 5 series as the best car made in recent times and would choose one in this case. However, the mileage seems very low for the year and engine type, so I'd be wary of clocking. You can ring the dealers in the service book to cross check the history and miles.

The new Mondeo? The old model will be worth nothing when it comes time to sell...

The Ford Mondeo is the best bet / value for money, but as said will depreciate more than the other choices, however if you intend keeping the Ford for a few years you may well come out "evens"

I't a personal thing only you can choose ;)

Thanks for all the replies. I love the C320 I have only had it since November 2006 and I have covered 22,000 miles. Looks like I will be covering around 30,000 miles per annum for the next two years and there seems to be a few issues looming with the Merc. I have tried to predict future values for all these cars and because the mileage would be so high there doesn't seem to be a lot in it.
I would love to buy a C320CDI or a C270CDI but I can't seem to make the figures work.I really need the comfort of a warranty as I have shelled out quite a bit on the Merc and really cannot afford to keep this up.
Hope I can find a compromise as I would love to stick with Mercedes.
The other point is that the Merc Dealer offered me the lowest price for my car and was really snobbish about it not having a full FMBSH.The cars bodywork is in excellent condition having had new wings and various other rust issues rectified in May 2007. He started going on about the wonderful 30 year warranty and wasn't best pleased when I said that the car shouldn't have rusted in the first place. To cap it all the guy told me the C270CDI was the first V6 diesel from Mercedes. You would at least think that they would know about the product.
Still not decided what to do
