I'm guessing here, but aircon works in the same way as a domestic fridge - somewhere in the system is a heat exchanger to get rid of excess heat. I think it is placed in front of the coolant radiator, so when you have the aircon on, the air that cools the conventional radiator is hotter (having passed through the heat exchanger first).
