Maybe renew the coolant. Give the radiator a hose down.

Put the heaters on full to draw heat away. The engine wont let itself self destruct. Check your coolant level also.

Looks about 110c on your gauge, but is the sensor sending the right info to start with ?
Is it higher than it usually is ? Mine runs around 95 according to the display.

I can’t do that cos the heater is blowing cold.. that’s another issue I need to deal with

It usually fluctuates between 90 - 100... but mostly sits around 90..

I’ll check the level before I set off again.. hopefully it won’t go any higher

Check for coolant loss. Then run the engine and check the hoses by squeezing them. If the top hose is rock hard then you may have a blown head gasket or cracked head.

This is assuming the sender to to temp gauge is reading correctly? You can smell an over hot engine.

One other thing to check is the make of the radiator, you have a 270cdi engine 2003 vintage. Around that time they fitted one of two rads the german Beher & the French Valao. The French one has a high failure rate, which allows the rad coolant into the cooling gallery's of the auto box.

I’m assuming that wouldn’t be good for the auto box?

Figured out the problem...

the coolant header tank was empty.. took quite a bit to fill it back up.. drove home and the temp stayed at the usual 90 all the way back but when I got home I wanted to check the pipes as mentioned as the coolant is obviously going somewhere

thankfully it’s not the head gasket or the radiator but I do have a leaking water pump.. best get that changed..

How do you conclude its not the head gasket or radiator......

pinhiles in a rad can be hard to see as the coolant evaporates faster than its visible. I gasket leak is not always visible as it could be leaking into the exhaust.

Something is leaking in the entire circuit and needs to be properly investigated.

Running at 100 is too high (assuming your not going upd down the alps on a summers day) and the fact your getting no hot air!

Regulalr maintenece to even lift the hood and check levels should be the norm.

Does the CLK not have a coolant level sensor?
