need some help please

the other day my E320 cdi (51 reg ) started to over heat , the heater inside the car went cold also , and there was a funny grinding noise from the front of the engine ,

have found out the viscouse fan was the grinding noise , the car didnt loose any water this is the strange bit ,

as anyone got any ideas what it could be ,

i can only think it might be the thermostat packed up . ive ordered a new fan ,

any info would you please mail me on bigdaz1970@yahoo.com

thanks in advance

This sounds like the water pump has packed up, so you may not need the fan.

Slip the serpentine belt off and you can then turn the water pump with your fingers, the same with the fan, they should all spin freely

The only way to check the water pump is to remove the belt, and turn it by hand to feel any roughness, , the visco fan cuts in at 80c, you cant see if the water is circulating as there is a header tank, if the pump spins easily then it should be OK

When you have the fan off, have a good look at the pump, take the belt off and make sure the pump spins and there is no play in the pulley.

Grinding noise are quite often the pump bearings as Malcolm said
