OK, some info please.

Returning yesterday from a longish trip, I was stationery in some traffic for a short time - the temp guage shot up, and then down again as soon as I started moving.

Have not yet got a Haynes, so some help please.

Replace two days ago the plastic themostat housing with the newer metal part.

The fan on the front of the engine appears to do nothing - you can stop it with a finger at any engine temperature.

So:

How do I bleed the coolant system, it is not pressurising?

How do I diagnose the cooling fan?

Any help appreciated.

You've already done so. Replace the viscous couping

Renew the cap on the header tank. Turn the heater on and run the engine till warm with the cap off. Refill as needed. Put new cap on

I suspect that this will solve the problem

Hello Tony, the visco fan should go at full power when the engine reached 80c and if the visco coupling is good it will slice a carrot,,it sounds like yours needs to be replaced.

I believe it is a visco on your car but it could be a clutch type.

Take a peep where the fan joins the head and see if there are 2 thin wires coming out of the top

Hi

I see no wires

WDB1240832F177749

Is there a howto anywhere on changing the coupling?

Is it a DIY on the drive with average tools/ability job?

Thanks again, this forum is brilliant.

OK Thanks.

Looks to be loads of room on mine, and I guess the belt tensions differently to the illustrations - alternator?

Do I need that special tool, or can a way be improvised to hold the waterpump pulley?

The belt was replaced 12/02 at 137660, now 190000, should I do the belt as well?

Is it worth thinking about renewing the waterpump, or do they wear over 200K.

Anyone got a cheap source for the coupler?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for the answers.

Hi again

that model 230 does not have viscous coupling - its a magnetic hub - per a very friendly person at Boston MB.

Going to check fuses etc. any other ideas please?

Richard, you are right, just shorted the leads and the fan came on.

This one:

Anyone can identify this plug for me. I confess to removing it without looking at its orientation, and it can be replaced in many different one.

Thanks

So you do have two wires coming out of the clutch on the fan

Malcolm

I cant see the wires, but if I short the wires in the sensor shown in the picture the fan starts, and the dealer confirmed that the fan is not viscous.

I'm getting a new sensor tomorrow, and will try and trace the wires.

Thanks for all of your help.

Chopped carrots for tea today.

Fan comes on just fine after changing the sensor.

Best £20 I've spent in ages.

Thanks again all of you for all of your help.
