So guys the e220d 17reg I haven't driven much since covid, would u still get it serviced annually despite v low use or would u put some miles on it since the last service. I remember Audi A6 service was once every 18k miles .. is there an equivalent for 220d engines?

18000 miles on same oil is crazy in my opinion. I change mine every 8k. Mercedes oil is cheap direct from main dealers on eBay. The mercedes diesel engine is so easy to change the oil and filter get your self an extraction pump it's an easy half hour. Loads of videos on YouTube. Oil is cheap engines aren't as Scotty Kilmer says.

^ exactly this… I did this in May this year, yearly service intervals are just a cash generator for the dealers, I believe MB were bi-annual but changed to annual. My BMW is bi-annual unless you do the mileage in which case the car tells you

I used to do 35k a year on the A6 - Car would decide that service was due every 18k, ran the car for nearly 100k and everything was fine. When I compare with that, changing oil on 8k sounds excessive. Not a criticism Funkyboy but does make me think - Is it just whatever we get used to?

I've never successfully once changed an engine oil, usually there's a one nut or bolt or filter that's too difficult to open and I end up taking the car to the mechanic.

Your reply encourages me to have a go again. I'll check out the videos

Changing oil at less than 10,000 miles or 1 year gets +1 from me. IMO: Its a machine, I should look after it, one of the best ways to do that is regular oil changes, and this seems to be the wisdom of old engineers who have been using the same machines all their lives. The reason they usually state for the long life of the machine is regular oil changes. Asking 2 years or 20k +/- miles of an oil seems a lot to me.

The hardest thing about an oil change on many cars is getting access to the bits you need to undo. If you can do this, then it is little more difficult that undoing 2 nuts (one being the filter), screwing the new filter on, putting another nut back in place and pouring a liquid. Making a cup of tea takes more instructions.

If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, you could take it to a trusted mechanic that isn't an MB specialist and pay less ££ per hour for their labour. For example in my old 4x4 I went to my village mechanic (It didnt need specialist skills for this job) and I paid a lot less for oil changes in the diffs, axels, transfer box, gear box and engine combined than I paid for an engine oil change at a specialist on other cars.

Looks too easy.. need to invest in something this lifts the car and something that opens the oil filter.. other than that straightforward.. they didn't use any oil extraction pump though

Old engineers are used to old engines where such an oil change regime was necessary, modern engines are much more durable.

If you want to keep a full and correct service history, have it serviced.
The service schedule is every 12 months or 15500 miles, whichever comes soonest.

I just had mine serviced after covering just under 2k miles over the last 12 months.
Waste of money? Maybe, but I want to keep the correct service record.

MB were cunning when the 203 C class became the 204 series - I had the 203 C270 and changed to our current (since 2012) S204. they changed the service interval from 2 years/15.5k miles (whichever came first) to 1 year/15.5k miles - so doubling the cost of servicing a low mileage car like mine - we do about 7.5k miles pa in the S204!!). I ignore the 1 year thing - use nothing but fully synthetic proper spec oil at every change, do the air and fuel filter changes at recommended 4 year intervals, have the brake fluid checked for water content, change it if required or if brake pedal starts feeling soft (after checking/changing pads), and do not use a main stealer at their extortionate prices ( and apprentices rather than experienced mechanics!).

Your car was set to AVS (Audi Variable Service) I know loads of people doing the same with no issues at all.

I have my car serviced once a year when it flashes up on the dash, no issues but I am not a believer in frequent oil changes as FS Oil will last with no issues because that is what it was designed to do

Same with mine - it's one of the reasons I've hung on to it. In theory it'll go to 19,500 miles (it resets to 13K but only drops 100 miles for every 150 driven) or two years, but in practice the mileage reduces if the car is used for short trips etc. When I first got mine I chickened out at around 16K and had it serviced, but since then my mileage has dropped off and it now goes to 2yrs usually having done around 10K miles.
