Mercedes Benz ML 270 cdi Auto W163 2002
Hi
I am thinking of replacing my Alternator on my - Mercedes ML 270 cdi Auto 2002 W163 - VIN: WDC1631132A351853
How will i know which is the correct alternator for my vehicle, as they have different Amperage ranges etc.

A few days ago I went through a deep puddle or rather a flooded road going to Manchester, and soon after, my battery warning light has started coming on and off intermittently ( every 40 seconds or so ), and the alternator is now not charging...... ALSO the alternator bearing is also become somewhat noisy !

Thanks

I#d first be getting under the bonnet, disconnecting the alty and get a hair drier in there to make sure its all dry including the connections, then take it from there.

Call your MB dealer or MB newcastle for the correct one based on the vin

Or get a local alternator repair specialist to rebuild your alternator for you - if it's not repairable you've not lost much (just their time to diagnose that it's beyond repair) - if they can repair it, it will be much cheaper than a new alternator and be as good as a new one.

Best to see the Mercedes parts guy ,,there are three alternators there and it looks like you could have one of them, and i dont know off hand if the updated alternator will fit your car engine .Number 8 is water cooled so it might be the give away and be the one you need see if yours is water cooled .

Mioba what is this = water colled alty ?? i am confused
BM and Mercedes use them - makes them quieter and can be smaller as water cooling is more efficient

cooled - typo. Fat fingers using the phone.

It means the alternator is water cooled.

Dont make the mistake and think the alternator is for a water cooled car - which it inevitably is.

I replaced mine last year with a reconditioned unit off the dreaded Ebay  , the guy had 100% positive feed back though and to be fair looked like a very professional job with test certification etc, it was £100 with discount for the old unit.
Been spot on so far, bit of a pig to fit though.
You will need to order the 2 small rubber "O" rings for the coolant feed pipe from Mercedes, that and top and bottom radiator hoses cost more than the alternator.
