Hi all,

I'm planning to change the ATF and wonder what ATF should I use. Should I use the MB fuid at 8.00 per litre or not? Can anyone advise me what ATF is correct for a car of this age, model etc.

1992 E-CLASS 124, 603 engine 3 litre diesel with a four speed auto box.

Thanks in anticipation.

Assuming that ATF has improved over the years should i get the mb stuff or just get the Dexron II that was original with the car. Is the new MB stuff not suitable or as good as Dexron II for a car of my age ?

I use Dextron II in the 500E from one of the reputable main suppliers. I've had no problems in the last 125K mls - thats on top of the 100K mls from new. Just change the fluid at the regular intervals along with the filter and gasket but take great care when you install the sump pan.

Mercedes auto 4 speed sump pans have a habit of bending the flange a small amount every time they are refitted. If you torque them up to the correct value the distortion eventually won't seal with the gasket and it leaks. At worst spewing fluid all over the road when hot. The fix other than a new pan is to loctite the bolts in and tighten evenly by feel up to the point that the vertical location tabs are just on the point of moving. You may find this is a much lower torque than recommended but it works. The loctite is used to ensure the bolts don't work loose at these settings.

Next tip:- When filling the 'box I use an empty (clean) silicone mastic tube with a nozzle attached to act as a funnel. It holds a larger amount of fluid, is stable and the job is easier and quicker. I also use the same mastic tube with the plunger and mastic gun to top up diffs and manual gearboxes.
