Correct tyres for E350 Coupe

Hi folks
I've got a 2013 E350 coupe. It's described as an AMG, but I think that's mainly trim. It may be that it has stiffened suspension - it rides quite hard through bumps. It's fitted with Prestivo (Chinese) tyres which I think are part of the Yokohama family. I'm told that these are run flat tyres and I've been advised to set them to 36psi all round.
My questions are - 1) are these tyres any good? 2) will they be contributing to the hard ride? and 3) the car has tyre pressure monitoring - can I display the tyre pressures on the console?

Eeek , run flats and Chinese . I would change them to normal non run flats when they wear out or change them and sell the, on eBay if they have life left .
I always run pressures at 32/33 ish regardless of tyre size

If your car has TPMS then you should be able to display the pressure in each tyre on the dash. If it just has Pressure loss warning, then you can't. No sure what's fitted to your car. My 2013 E350 Coupe didn't have individual sensors, but my 2015 CLS does.

3) yes if you do have TPMS (you can tell by the valve. Usually different than the norm with a bolt on it). Will show each tyres pressure.

Avoid budget tyres, they cause ALL SORTS of issues which only get worse the heavier and more powerful the car becomes. Frankly if I was in power, economy tyres would be made illegal.

Without research, some budget brands are subsidiaries of the larger brands, so manufacturer and performance is somewhat better than the unknowns but they won’t be as cheap as the cheapest offerings. Still best avoided on heavier and pokey cars.

As above run flats will ride even harder and I will assume you car has big alloys anyway. I personally just run XL load rating non run flats on all my cars and play with pressures around the stated default specified to see what works best.

I would be changing them for Uniroyal RS5 or Goodyear Assy 5 in NON RF

Pressure wise 36 all round is good and reduces wear on the rears (they have a tendancy to wear in the middle more if inflated to 38psi)

Despite cost even on my old CLS320 I switched out the dated Contisport contacts 3's in perfect shape as they were causing me traction issues! My personal favourite Goodyear Eagle Asy 5 which, cost me £680, I grabbed 2 from blackcircles and 2 from camskill as this was quite a bit cheaper than our distributor at the time. I would also recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and Dunlop Sportmaxx. If that's too rich, I'd then recommend the Falken FK510.

The E350 has decent torque when running spot on and the tyres above will easily cope wit it.

What size wheels ? The roads we “enjoy“ in West Yorkshire are not conducive to a comfortable ride if your car has huge alloys and tiny sidewalls

Having thought - some of you are suggesting ditching the cheapo runflats. But as the car is a BLUETEC then I can't carry a spare wheel - would you just run with a can of goo and hope for the best?
And I also read somewhere that if the car is built for runflats then you shouldn't use ordinary tyres because they'll upset the suspension... any truth in that? Or is this just MB saying this?

I take your point Blobcat - our local roads here are rubbish. And I have 19 inch wheels, and that will go someway towards answering the question I guess. I may have a powerful car but I don't drive like a loony...

I only carry a heavy duty tyre inflator in my cars and I'd say this coupled with a can of tyre weld will suffice for emergencies.
Personally, I would just buy a space saver as a spare from a breakers yard and keep that for emergencies.

3 out of my 4 don’t have spares, I have a couple of cans of tyre weld in each and a compressor.
I wouldn’t bother with a spare and I’d definitely ditch the runflats. I’d also switch to smaller rims as you can’t see them from the drivers seat but you can definitely feel them…

I don't think many MBs have come with runflats as standard, unlike BMW

19in wheels are not comfortable on our roads with run flat tyres unless you have double wishbone suspension or airmatic (McPherson strut suspension which you have doesn’t handle them well at all).
I’d either change to 18in wheels with non runflats or run the 19 in wheels the same. You will need XL rated tyres if you change to non runflats

Many thanks - a bit more investigation. I don't have runflats after all - they're just reinforced. But they ARE Chinese. And I think they've been on for a while. I guess I'll be replacing them. Although my missus would like me to replace the entire car! She doesn't much care for it, especially the large heavy doors - and I have to say I don't like them much myself. Wasn't a problem with the CLK, but that was a few years ago. Age doesn't help, I suppose...

There are usually two numbers stamped on the tyre sidewall thats the week and year of manufacture. At 7 odd years tyres begin to perish. I need to change tyres on my W251 (from 2014).

The tyes can't be that old as the MOT history mentions failures in 2019. The Brand is Prestivo and they say "Made in China"(!). I suspect thery're cheapos as the owner was planning on getting rid of the car. Second time that's happened to me. But then again when you buy a used car you're buying the reason the previous owner got shot of it...

I half suspect that even if I change the tyres I'll still get a hard ride because of the 19" wheels.
