Cost of Adblue

Halfords are now charging £20 for 10L Adblue. The last time I bought was about a year ago and it was close to half this price. So it's now more expensive than diesel!
Why such a massive increase?

Not difficult to make 66% de-mineralised water and 33% pure urea crystals - Finland seems to be the biggest EU supplier

Interesting point, how would it know indeed.

I did quickly Google this and aaanton11 has a video where they did just this. Drain the tank of ad blue, fill with regular tap water and ran the vehicle. They said all was well until 250mls later when somehow the system knew what was in the tank was not as blue.

I know that Total do clearnox which is an adblue replacement that doesn’t crystallise but no retailers for it that I can see.

There is a major supply crunch of Adblue or as the Americans call in, DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). Same story as anything else; production was scaled back during the pandemic/ lockdowns, now demand is spiking (globally) and on-stream production capacity isn’t sufficient to meet the demand.

Primary source of urea is pig pi55, being serious.

The latest systems will use a combined in tank level and quality sensor, so water would almost immediately be detected.
Some earlier systems didn't have a quality sensor so would only detect there was something wrong when the downstream NOx is no better than the upstream. It would flag a NOx conversion efficiency fault but couldn't do that until the system was operating. 250mls to do that seems high though.
