I need to replace the ignition system in my 2001 C180. Can anyone give me any indication as to a reasonable price for this?
The Mercedes dealership is quoting me approx £700.

The car has a full Mercedes service history. B service not due for another few thousand miles.Would there be any point in challenging Mercedes on the cost of the ignition system if car is 5yr old?

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks

Do you have any more info on the problem and how it started, etc.

Thanks Bobcat, you will be as old as me one day (memory, joking) this fault I cant believe how they can come to the conclusion that is the ignition module for a start there are firms out there who can test it, before repair, will think a bit.

Ignition Costs

This is a quick summary Malcolm.
Over a period of weeks the car would only open intermittently with the fobs and, sometimes the ignition would accept/suck in the key and the car would start, most times it would not. In the mornings it would not start but by mid day in warm weather it would??? Then it got to point it wouldnt start at any time. Then the battery drained, replaced it, drained again several times despite recharging it.When first recharged it might allow the car to open and start but then would not, eventually within a few days battery was drained again (checked all the usual boot & interior lites/radio etc, nothing left on.
Merc Garage rang today to say it requires an ignition system and will be in garage for 10 days!

Thanks Malcolm

Hello,

When you say ignition system what do you mean? I assume you mean the switch that the key goes into? This is called the EIS switch, This could give you all the probelm's you are having as it does give out the command to lock and unlock car also can give you starting faults as is the ignition switch. I've done a few of these modules for simliar reason's. I think you will find that the reason that your car may have to be at the dealer for 10 days is because when you order a EIS module it usually comes from germany, Once you have the module you have to order what they call a green key bring the module in to service. They can't be ordered together for sercuity reasons.

Hope this is of some help

My thoughts are as Ludders completely, nothing to do with ignition module.

Thanks Luders & Malcolm
The car had to be lifted from my driveway and taken to merc dealer this morning. I followed up with a call and they just said ignition system, approx £700.
Does this seem reasonable/standard for EIS switch?

Similar problem

I had a similar problem with my C200 only ONE day after I bought it (on Autotrader from a local mechanic).

The car started no problem initially. After a while it would conk out when I reversed out of my drive. Eventually it stalled at a road end. I managed to get it back home and tried it again. This time there was no ignition at all!!

Contacted the mechanic and he picked it up on a trailer. Said he reckoned he knew what the problem was. Told me I could pick it up later that day. Got the bus to his workshop only to be told that the problem was not what they thought it was. An auto electrician came over and he took out the windscreen washer bottle and tested the ignition booster (I think that's what they called it!). Anyway they traced the misfiring and non firing to this module.

Mechanic phoned a few parts suppliers here in Northern Ireland to get a price for a replacement. No-one stocked such a thing. He phoned Mercedes and they quoted about £1100!!! He managed to get a reconditioned one from somewhere in the UK for about £500.

Nice thing about it all was they (the sellers) honoured all cost even though there was no warranty with the car AND gave me a lift home that day - even though the car only cost me £1700.... sorry £1690 - they came me a tenner back for petrol!! He certainly didn't make much profit on that sale!
