I've got a 98 E240... with a rusty bonnet ! I've done 160k miles and those motorway miles have taken their toll.

Any ideas on the best way to replace and any cost estimates - I'll probably keep away from the official dealers.

Thanks

try this

I would try and negotiate a discounted one from the stealership and find a bodyshop to fit it or just get a quote from a bodyshop

Richard,

My E320 is going in this month for a front end respray at the bodyshop I always use now. The cost for a front end including wings is £500 and if previous jobs on other cars are anything to go by it will be a super job and probably very durable - better than Mercs original! (not hard) This will include stripping the body of all of the jewellry and glitz and spraying the panels individually, no masking tape tell tales anywhere.

The 500E will follow later this year but the original finish is miles better than E320

Clive

500E (1994 and 350k kms on original paint)
E320CDIT210 (2001 and 100k on original paint but very spotty)

Euro Car Parts are quoting:

GENUINE n/a 801220530 BONNET E CLASS 06/99-02 E CLASS 2000-02 (210 CHASSIS)
BONNET £254.80

REPLACEMEN n/a 801220531 BONNET E CLASS 06/99-02 E CLASS 2000-02 (210 CHASSIS)
BONNET £127.85

So a good quality part from breakers shoud be less than half the above amount. Still very expensive new though when you've added VAT and carriage, and a paint job. I'd be very wary of pattern parts, genuine are best.

I've seen one or two on E-Bay recently, a search on E Class might provide a result. Some of the advertisers are breakers (Euromerc etc).

Hope this helps

I don't see £250 being expensive for a genuine 210 bonnet, nor is £500 expensive for a bonnet & wings repaint

I'd expect to pay £300-£400 for a pair of wings to be prepped & painted so £500 inc bonnet & blending in is good

If the difference between a genuine bonnet and a pattern part is only £120 then I'd take the genuine part every time. Bodyshop guys hate wasting time with pattern parts that don't fit

The eBay listing says the bonnet will fit any E-Class from 1996 to 2002. I don't think that is true. The grill on the pre-facelift E-Class is squarer than the facelift E-Class grille and I'm sure you can't interchange the pre and post facelift grills. This suggests (to me anyway) that the bonnets are different between pre and post facelift cars.

Having said all that, your '98 E-Class will be pre-facelift and the bonnet in the eBay auction looks to be pre-facelift.

Up here in the sticks Nick, bonnet and full roof section inc. 'A' pillars, plus petrol filler flap £250 all in! Not too much prep certainly, just half a dozen small blisters. Only a two-man business but been doing it for over 40 years. Had both front wings, rear quarter panels (because of wheel arches) and a door panel done by them over a year ago for £320.
Had I been able to afford getting it all done at once would have been cheaper still but, being a mere peasant ..................... :-(
