times new roman I know it sounds silly but I can't get the courtesy lights on my friend's 200T (1987) to work at all on the front doors, neither does the headlight warning buzzer. The rear interior lights work ok with the rear doors and tailgate, but the only way I can get the front overhead light on is to use the sliding switch. I've checked all the fuses.

Courtesy light

Could be some thing simple, faulty door switch contact, bad earth, or broken wire, probably in an electronic unit though, I have similar problem on my 2000, SLK 200, my light comes on when the ignition is turned on and stays on untill switched off, then dims to off after a while, open doors no light !! I to use the slider switch. MB want to change components until fault found, no auto electricians, sounds expensive, I have bought a new interior light unit (off ebay - cheap) but still have the fault. I now suspect the pse which also controls the central locking have asked MB customer services for some advice, still waiting 2 weeks now.

Sounds like a dodgy earth on one or both of the front door light switches. Take the switches out and check they do work and also the associated earth is good (i think there is an earth near the door switch but I could be wrong.) Had a similar propblem with my 200te, turned out to be a poor earth.

Good luck

I totally agree with JonathanC.

Had so many electrical problems on my E220 CDI that I put it up for sale in frustration.

Took it to Geroge Fraser in Wembly and despite the car being in the workshop for about 5 hours, they sorted all my problems for a very modest £165 inc. Problem was the door switch.

Sounds to me like the dimmer control unti has gone up river. The buzzer fault might be unrelated and coincidental.
