Hi All

I have bought a lovely low milage SL400 in March this year.
Unfortunately despite driving with care I have discovered this morning that my front windscreen is cracked near the dashboard.
I have no idea how it happened, don't recall any object hitting the windscreen.
Appreciate any feedback/advice on replacement supplier/costs etc.

Do you have windscreen coverage on your insurance? If so use that and just pay the excess

Firstly.

Secondly, claim of your insurance, and just pay the excess, I would have thought. :)

The windscreen on my CLK cracked about 2 or 3 weeks after hitting a large pothole.

Thanks, unfortunately I have £450 policy excess!
It’s still probably much less than a new screen…
Give auto glass or any of the other glass places a call to compare if it’s worth it or not going via insurance.
(Windscreen replacement doesn’t affect your no claims discount)

No the glass cover is treated differently- check your policy wording - if you have glass cover it’s usually only £75-125 excess. And it does not affect your No Claims Discount.
Thanks, will check with RAC insurance tomorrow.
Be interested to know from you guys if you got good low cost insurance cover?
I am paying £1000 fully comprehensive with 3 years NCD, a lot of companies I approached quoted ridiculous prices ie over £1500 up to £2000 etc

Call your ins co and ask.
450 is accident, windscreens are usually much less.
Get it done asap. every pothole - that crack will grow before your eyes

Check your policy like I did about 10 years ago when my wife side window was smashed & the sat nav stolen.
The policy said much to my surprise no excess if a criminal act, £75 excess if accidental on any glass. No loss of NCD.

Thanks all, I checked my policy and I think its only £60 excess phew. One company are looking to charge over £1800 for a direct payment!
Plus i think it was caused by the awful condition of the roads near me.

Happened to me last year when a stone chip flew up from a speeding motorbike. All sorted under insurance (£190 excess) by Autoglass but they did need to do it at their local depot to calibrate all the various cameras and sensors.

That doesn't surprise me on the cost, SLs are expensive beasts.. Had a new one on insurance on my E class some time ago, full price was £1,600 or thereabouts. Just paid the excess. Thankfully! Also had sensors too. Autoglass were very very good.

Where do you get these prices from??
We bought a new screen for our 14 plate SLK because the rear view mirror mount wasn't holding the mirror on.
£200 supplied fitted by National Glass.
If you put it through your insurance it will increase your premiums as it was a claim. So just be aware especially if you're paying £1500 annual policy.

I’ve never been asked at renewal if I’ve had a windscreen replaced or repaired so not seen it affect my insurance premiums

Years ago I had a screen replaced on a car. When I came to renew its insurance she asked if I'd had any claims ... I said no! .... but she corrected me by saying I'd had a screen fitted. She agreed though that it didn't affect my NCD

Some do, some don't ask Rus.
However on my renewals, it not something they ask. Just if there is any changes.
If I'm looking for new insurance, that's a different story.
