Mercedes Class R 350
Hi everybody,
I am the owner of a class R 350 gas.
When I was driving, I heard a cliking noise that you can hear in the video below. I then took the car for diagnosis and other than a few electronic errors and the cooling level being too low, I have the DTC code 1208 which looks suspicious. "wrong timing with cranckshaft right" (P0016).

I know that on these engines there are many problems with the timing of the camshafts or their sensor.

What do you think this noise is coming from?

thanks you

Hello and welcome,

It doesn't sound like the serpentine belt, or anything on it to me - The M272 can suffer from balance shaft issues, I'd be getting it to a respected indie for a diagnostic and assessment ASAP

Run it with the belt off and see if noise goes away .. my personal opinion is its the wheel on the belt tensioner.
The tensioner can be seen chattering slightly in the video.

That does sound nasty. You have my sympathy …
Check your engine number is AFTER 30-759427for the M272!
MB V6 & V8 balance shaft and timing gear faults. V8s only have timing gear faults.
  • M272 Engine Serial No. 2729..30 468993. Bad magnets Camshaft sensors up to 30-759427for the M272
Earlier ones look for.
  • Fault Code: P1200 or P1208 Pending or Stored
Fault codes 0059, 0060, 0063, 0064, 0271, 0272, 0275, and 0276. These fault codes could be recorded as current in the ECU fault memory. If current or pending these codes are caused by a malfunctioning camshaft adjustment solenoid. If you have these codes you should check for oil leak at camshaft adjustment solenoids.
OP seems to have the P1208.
I would check this out with a good Indy promptly. A good mechanic told me if you ignore this problem for a long time, you can write the car off. Beyond Economic Repair . BTW in the pre purchase examination it was the first thing he checked, didnt even open the bonnet. “If it falls in this range just walk away - no point in buying trouble”.

I got this info from Malcolm, a very knowledgable and nice guy.
Slightly different for my V8, but luckily my engine was clear of these issues. TBH had it been in the problem range I would have walked away and bought a later car.

Good website below on checking which M272 / M273 engines can suffer with balance shaft issues
