Yesterday as I put petrol in my car, it wouldn't start afterwards, It did start after some time and I went to do some shopping. Parked it up and it wouldn't start again. It did start again but just died as I was exiting the car park barrier. RAC man took me to the local specialist (independent) who just phoned up to say its a crankshaft sensor which needs replacing. I thought it would be this after searching this site. Well, they are asking for £300 + vat for changing it. Is it the right price? I know the sensor itself is not much but is there a lot of work involved?

Sorry, the post seems hurried. Should I let them get on with the job for the price quoted. The car is a year 2000 e240 (petrol) with 135000 on the clock.

Thanks in advance.

at dealer rates I'd expect around a £200 bill for this. £100 for the diagnostic and the other hundred for the part and installation. £150 ish from an indie. So, yes £300+vat needs some explanation.
Often when you do query, you discovere that there is a good explanation, but if not, get the car out of there and contact the recovery firm to complain as they can then avoid them.

Phoned local Mercedes dealer: Diagnosis= 99.19 + VAT, Part= £73+VAT, labour= 2 hours at 99.19 per hour + VAT. They reckon the difference is because of the difference in model and the engine lay out:(

Pfft - 2 hours?! Heck, if Oliver at Prestige could manage to get mine changed on a 4.2 litre V8 crammed in to a W202 engine bay inside 30 minutes then 2 hours is just taking the wee-wee. No way I'd pay £300 to get it changed, I'd rather try myself if I were you and can't find a good local indie.

Just me 2p.

I paid £87 to my main dealer when I needed this work doing.

This is more like it. Around £100 from main dealer (outside London/M25)
£300 is a joke. V6 E class takes about 5 minutes tops to replace, providing the engine isn't too hot.
