hi everyone, i don`t know if anyone can advise on this, e280 big ends went after i cooked the engine due to head gasket going, decided to remove the engine and do a total rebuild, had the crank regrounded and new bearing shells and thrust washers supplied by the engineering firm who done the work but was told they had to take a far bit of the endfloat, so check the end float is still in the required spec, if not then i will need over size thrust washers, my question is can i check this with out putting all the bearing shells back in or can i get away with say just no 1/ no 4 /thrust bearing / and no 7 as i may need to remove again to get these over size ones

any help would be great thanks,

I would fit all the shells and caps if it were me. That way you can be sure that the endfloat you are measuring is accurate. I know it is a tiny bit more work, but if the endfloat is in tolerance, you are all done.

hi malcolm, engine no is 10494222008635, yes your right i need the end float figure, now what ian was saying about change one then change them all this is what im doing, BUT this is where im a bit confused ? if the engineering firm had to take a far bit off the end float as they said, then surely they should of supplied the correct size thrust washers to begin with so the end float would be the correct spec any way is this right or not ?

All I have is radial bearing play 0.030-0.045 Axial 0.100-0250

conrod radial 0.020-0.050

Thrust washers of the same thickness must always be inserted on one side in the crankcase and in the bearing cap. the oil grooves must face towards the contact surface of the crankshaft and must be oiled. the anti twist lockis on the thrust washer in the bearing cap
