Crash Box Properly Installed?

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all for your help in the past :!:

Today was the first day that I had finally finished the dash out repair of my evaporator, expansion valve and of course the replacement of the dehydrator on my 1987 420 SEL. :D

I had driven it a couple days ago to the local repair shop to have the A/C vacuumed out and charged with Freon without incident. I drove it again today to the gas station for a fill up and the A/C at the center vents was an enjoyable cool 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5.5 Celsius. :cool:

Later today my son and I decided to take the old girl out for a bath and as we were pulling back into the garage the SRS light flickered. This seemed to raise some concern since I have never had this happen before in the past and the crash box had to be removed in order to extract the heat exchanger and evaporator-housing box from the vehicle to make the necessary repairs. :eek:

I took great care in the handling of the crash box when removing it and replacing it to the transmission tunnel, I even draped the padded material back over top of it again! :(

What could be causing the light to flicker intermittently? Is their something that the vehicle must relearn since the battery was disconnected for a period of time? Or did I just do something wrong on the reinstallation? :confused:

Things are kind of cramp in the center console!

Any thoughts would be appreciated. :D

No Airbag

Hi Malcolm,

No, just one air bag in the steering wheel except for when my wife is in the car. :p

When I did the dash out I did not touch the air bag. My car has the electric telescopic steering column. So I extended the steering column the whole way out, removed the instrument cluster and then pulled the dash up and over the steering wheel.

It was tight but it worked!

When I removed the center console I just took the two torx screws out of the crash box, leaving it all plugged in together. Then I just simply moved it away from the work area.

That's what I don't understand. :confused:

This is not easy, could be seat sensor or seat belt sensor, I will have a look and see if I can find anything, does your wife read the postings

No my wife does not read these postings if she did well...:Oops:

I took the vehicle to goto the bank and everything was normal, no flicker, nothing but the usual 10 second duration at start up.

I know that I read somewhere that there is a counter in the SRS system that the signal has to be sent ten times before deploying the air bag. But it made no mention as to a duration of time.

I am wondering if the counter resets to zero after a certain period of time. Fore this would be the logical thing to do or does it retain the number of times that the signal is sent till the vehicle is turned off.

I wouldn't think a manufacture would design it to be that way but...

Anyway I do appreciate all the help

Low Voltage???

I took the vehicle out to the store and drove on some pretty rough roads to see if some jarring would cause the SRS light too come on, but not a flicker.

When I got home and was pulling into the garage I noticed that as soon as I applied the brake the SRS light came on for about one second and went back off. :confused:

I did have the A/C system on during my trip but I can not remember if I turned it off prior to entering the garage or not. :rolleyes:

I do know that it did not even flicker when the vehicle was at the store parking lot. Nor when I would come to a stop during the drive home. But I do live out in the country and my gravel drive is 450 feet long and on a grade. The grade is even grater at the house. So I do approach rather slowly. :shock:

I was wondering if a low voltage situation could be the culprit to the SRS light turning on? :(

Since the drop in reves and the A/C on would place a draw on the system, and being that the A/C has not worked and the SRS light did not come on till till I changed the evaoprator and ect...
