My 88 420 has begun creaking under braking load or when driving over speed humps etc, I have liberally sprayed silicon in the general area but not cured the creak. The noise is not very mercedes like.

Is there a bush that is more likely to making the noise on these cars and is it a DIY job?

cheers

Having someone push the car down on each corner while you listen may help to get nearer the problem.

Creaking 126 Suspension

Hello Matt,
I would suspect your offside front suspension if you can clearly hear creaking in the cabin. The snag is tracking down the offending pivot/ball joint since there are three ball joints, two pivots, one limited-travel bushing and of course the anti-roll bar bushing involved here. I don't know what your level of involvement as far as taking things on your car apart is but if you look at the front suspension and see any rust stains creeping out from a particular joint then it's fair to assume you've found the culprit. If the car still handles as normal and only has this annoying squeak and there are no visble signs of damage the first thing to do is loosen the Camber adjusting nut (without turning the eccentric bolt and upseting settings) and bounce that corner a bit -the sqeak usually disappears and all you have to do is retighten the locknut (again while stopping the bolt from turning) -silence should resume!
Cheers,
Jaz

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 126, it turned out to be the nut and bolt that holds the top suspension ball joint in the body. It had worked loose enough to allow the inner sleeve of the bush to to move with the suspension. A new nut and tightening the bolt on level groung cured the problem. Hope this cures the problem.
