Hi there,

Have a problem that seems to be evading mercedes specialist.

Had engine warning light come up and had into merc specialist.

Other symptoms are my Green E on dash for gear mode on first ignition cycle always takes forever to show up and if I drive off on the ignition cycle my cruise control does not work. Also when you try and put it in D or R before the green E comes up it clunks into gear harshly.

Took it to merc specialist and star said it needed new tcm module. Had that replaced. 24hours later car had same symptoms and engine light back on. Back to dealer and he said fuse was gone which locked out relay so he replaced them.

Got In to car and still have same symptoms. Has anyone out there had similar problem or might point me in right direction?

Love the car just want it fixed

Has the fuse blown again? Do you know which fuse it is?

Going to have a look in the morning. If it keeps blowing what is that likely to point to?

Hi that fuse hasn't gone. Its an odd one this! It is definitely something to do with drive mode. Would a faulty drive mode switch cause an issue with the car not knowing which mode it should be in under start up?

Have you checked out the battery is it the original it should be 12.6V at first start of the day MBs don’t like undercurrent batteries leads to all sorts of electronic problems

Hi Malcolm, I replaced the battery as it was the original after this started raising its head to try and hopefully get any voltage issues off the checklist. Its such a weird issue. Gearbox runs super smooth, had full gearbox service and TCM module replaced. All levels have been re checked and are fine. Main fault is it isnt seeing the drive mode on the ignition cycle takes ages to show up and when it does that no cruise control and it Clunks into D or R

Can cause all sorts, not 100% sure on the gear display though- but it can cause you to get stuck in park, not start, cruise control inop, notchy changes etc., whilst failing

Thanks John, Funnily enough I have had a couple of ignition cycles where everything comes on but when I go to turn over I get nothing for 2-3 secs then it fires up. Those brake switches are fairly cheap I might just replace it anyway.

I’d certainly be investigating that route regarding the problem as the car doesn’t appear to know what drive mode it’s in

Great thanks Malcolm. I will probably just order them and fingers crossed. At least they will be done anyways as seem to be something that needs changing anyhow. I'll let you know how I get on.

Morning chaps thought I would update you. Seems we have found the issue. Unbeknown to me there is a small aux battery which powers the Drive mode cruise control and selector on the W218. Its not the one you would normally find on the boot but situated elsewhere. This battery has gone dead and therefore the drive mode and cruise have been unable to engage and cruise has not been able to function due to a low voltage. After a bit of testing the guys managed to pull up the low voltage across this part of the system. Fingers crossed this is the repair. If not I feel I'm definitely zeroing in on the issue.

Ive got a brake switch and drive mode switch on order just in case as you never know!! Thanks for all your help on this.

Good one to keep an eye out for though!

I had that when my aux battery started to fail .on my w221
after a while i got a dash warning to that effect.

cold mornings were worst .
Mine was in the boot behind the cover for the rear seat if anyone's interested .
looks like some are under the dash.

I bought genuine merc battery , the terminals were very slightly different from the factory one so needed to work around that

Hello, please can someone help or guide me? Merc Vito RX60. Been trying for 4 years to resolve Cruise Control (CC) hardly ever works ... going around in circles. Interesting ideas above... Tried two new batteries and code resets, bingo it works, until you switch engine off: in a matter of hours CC dead again. Tried new ignition switch. Bizarre - when had 3 new tyres (wheels off) Bingo CC worked - until I turned off the engine. I really need CC to work on long trips, as my knee can cramps / locks. Even 300 miles driving for a good battery re-charge, is not enough to power up / activate the CC.
