Cruise Control lever broken, need help plz

Hello, I just bought a mercedes benz e240 1998 model - estate. The car came with the cruise control lever which is quiet loose, well actually very loose, I suspect that the lever is broken from inside the steering cover or so. IS there a way i can check it myself, like open the steering cover or the plastic trim around the steering and have a go, anyone got an suggestions please. If I was to open the trims around the steering, how would i do that.

I believe that the steering wheel has to come off

Try pushing it back in place and then just use in in the downward stroke.
