Hi guys,

My cruise control has just stopped working on my 1993 E320!! I seem to remember reading a thread a while ago on the very same subject, but need some refreshment on it.. I was making my regular journey on the m62 and couldn't get it to maintain any speed.. I think it may be something simple like a fuse or whatever, but would like some advice before I brave the cold!!

This has been discussed many times before so if anyone can direct me to a thread then it will be much appreciated..

thanks mario500

cruise control

Well I did check the history but couldn't find anything relevent... In the meantime however, I have found that my cruise control has come back to life!! One other thing I noticed before it died on me is that the revs in top gear seemed to be very high, compared with what they would be normally!
At 80 mph the revs were 4000, now the cruise has come back to life the revs are back to 3000 at 80 mph.. So I am summising that the gearbox needs a service.. UNLESS someone else knows otherwise and has some experience of this problem... Maybe control rods? maybe something to do with the acctuator?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.. and maybe this link will help someone else in the future..

many thanks Mario500

Hi Mario,

This happened on my last E280 95. It was working fine then all of a sudden it wouldn't maintain speed. Tried it again later and it worked fine for a few miles then failed. Someone on here told me to check my front brake pads and I found them to be close to the brake lining sensor. Changed the pads and my cruise control worked fine again. It maybe worth checking before going any further.

thanks Cruicky68...

Well I know that my brake wear indicator light is flashing a lot and has done so for ages .. I keep checking the brake linings for wear but all seems ok?? .. put it down to a frayed wire earthing or something..
Will check again though tomorrow (properly)

cheers mario...

Hi Mario,

If your wear light is flashing now and again, I would bet that's what's causing your cruise control fault. The control module takes reading's from all sensors and if any are at fault it will cut the power, similar to touching the brake pedal cancels the cruise control. Hope you find the fault OK.

Sorry guys the pad wear indicator has nowt to do with the cruise control. The cruise is cancelled via a supply from the stoplamp switch at the pedal. Could be your throttle body (auto idle) as this also doubles as the cruise actuator. Best to take it to a dealer for a startest. Thiscwill throw out any stored faults in the system and help with diagnosis. They should not charge much (or anything?) to do a test. For info the speed signal is supplied from the ABS ESP ASR control unit via the ABS wheel sensor (i think specifically from the front left sensor) If ABS is ok i suspect this signal will be ok.
