Hi,
I,m Intrigued why does the battery have to be resited?
I have a new tow bar at home (never been fitted) but from the installation instructions all the steel work and bracketry goes underneath the car, all the holes are premarked in the chassis rails of the car too, no need to even open the boot to fit it.
As horgantrevor says its the main battery for the car, I would hardly describe it as small, well over 12" long approx. 8" high, 8"wide.
Is there a battery under the bonnet too?

I maybe the battery for the car?

But not all are the same size, I changed one on my last car and it was really small. The one I changed it for was wo and a half times longer !!.

So it maybe for the car but just the incorrect one?

If you have on in the engine bay, what leads are coming off the one in the boot and where do they seem to go?

oh you silly people-- the battery is about 3"x6" like a motorcycle battery the towbar bolts underneath as you say but on my c180 esprit there were 2pcs of angle either side for reinforcing i assume. each has 1 captured nut and 1 hole this goes through the boot floor and through the towbar the angle bit also has 2 holes and this bolts through the rail each side for reinforcing.oh my battery is a huge one from my bro-in-laws new volvo

The battery would have to be alot bigger than that.

You of all people should know that.

If you think that my reply was silly I can avoid you in the future, and you were not bright enough to know what it was

Please don't make Malcolm avoid you, he is your best friend here. Trust me, he is so... not silly. I think TV's 20,000 plus posts maybe outclass your 27?

Battery in the boot on a W202 seems like the main battery - not sure what you mean by it being small, I think mine is bigger than yours...........!!

Mine is massive.........!!

I think maybe you should buy another BMW, you deserve each other.....

My 202 C class battery was in the boot too, as is the one in my current E (the last E was under the seat). I've never had a merc with the battery under the bonnet. I believe the last one to do that would have been the 124. Part of Mercs weight distribution thinking I'd guess. So, if it isn't in the boot, I'm curious - where is your main battery?
As for the little one - not an original fit item so it could be for all sorts of interesting 'entertainment' devices as suggested by some of our more creative and esteeemed contributors....

On the alarm. MB didn't fit standard alarms until 1999 on C classes. My 1995 had remote locking but no alarm so I had one integrated into the locking system.

Could be a backup battery for an alarm or tracker.
Yep, tracker batteries are this size (3" by 6"). Tracker installers used 'Yuasa' brand a lot. Colour grey?
They were often located in a 'secret place', i.e. the boot.
