Just had someone who said he can cut out my CAT and pop a new one in and weld the exhaust up again... For about £150ish...Beats spending £700 at the main stealers... What does everyone think? I have a E220CDI 2001 model...

Sounds Promising So Far...

Well my car has been at the independants all the way up in Birmingham (my father drove it up and took it to some chap who he thinks knows what he's talking about) (dads been a mechanic for Jaguar for 10 yrs then a dealer for about 20) and so far it sounds as if he may be having luck...Apparently the mechanic is finishing it today so I may get the car back tom... Will let you all know what he did/how much it cost etc...But, if it goes well, and I only spend 1/4 of what MB were saying... I'll be a happy bunny!!!

Are you sure it's the cat thats gone ? Seems very early for a failure,I've seen 1992 cars 200k up still on original cats.

Cats with a short life

This thread is really in the wrong section, Cats go faulty on cars that are not used very much, and that is a fact, I know of 10 1999 SL's all under 40k that have replaced them, and at £1500 wow.
I bought mine from Natiowide Cats at £215 each and they bolted on complete with front pipe and with a 2 year guarantee.
DO NOT park on long grass with a hot cat,it will cool the outer casing down before the ceramic cat inside has cooled, and crush it. Malcolm

She Purrs Like a Fat Cat on a Mat....

Got the car back, it drives just like before... so I'm a happy bunny... I need to get an update as to what was actually done (dad picked it up and dropped it over and I've not seen him) but it def didn't cost as much as main stealers... Will let you all know what was done and exactly where... they seem like guys who know what to do!

The cats on my 500E are still healthy after 350k Kms (220kmls). Although once they read this I bet they give up. The outside sheathing is disintegrating but there are no rattles or anything yet so on that performance I might be persuaded to go OEM. The last time a bought a pair of cheap cats they looked it - crap engineering but I needed to pass an MOT and sell it, so some other poor *** can benefit from the cheap engineering. My other thought is to use some of the hi qual competition cats and make them up with ss pipes as the rest of the system. Should be cheaper than mercs OEM prices.
