If i cant sell the merc which seems to be the case i thought how nice to make it a convertible. has anyone tried this or has any information regarding where to go for roofs etc and other parts needed to do the job, can the handle just having the roof removed and does it require aditional support underneath.

No, your last should have read, "Its a Mercedes, the thing sitting next to it is only a Porsche"

Come on dave which would you take for a blast 1st, a merc or a 911 ?, the merc is worth about 2 grand and always makes me feel like in not going to get there whereas the 911 always starts 1st time and NEVER fails to get me there. Ahead of time in most cases.
If mercedes built a car as good as porsche then they would have a great car. The wife needed a new car and we decided on an A class (cos i like the look of em), but i found the build quality to be crap so we bought the Audi A2 instead AND its FAR better a car than the A Class.
But having said that i love the merc to bits and when ever i take it out i feel im driving something special even if it does break down. But i love the 911 more so there.

If you goto www.carrera2.co.uk you can see what i mean, i have pics of the porka and the Merc. And if your even in the Cambs area i can take you out in the 911 then you can see what i mean.
Cheers Boys

Iv'e a funny feelin' your gonna get some stick about sayin' that, not from me, but maybe from some others,Iv'e never driven a Porche/Audi and if I do it'll probably be stolen!! (the porche that is he,he),but I do like my Merc and I know others do also.
So I think you better have your bullit proof vest on!especailly when Andy reads this!.

Merc misses the subtle humour, the difference between his "Porche" and jibbys "Porsche"?!

(About £18k I'd say..)

Mind, if Merc wakes up one morning and finds his Porche missing, he might accept it was down to bad weather, and not some spotty faced oik with a screwdriver...

To be fair, having had a look at jibbys web site, I have to wonder who is the more "sad", him for posting pictures of his fireplace, or me for looking???!!

I may have a solution though - how about a 500E jibby? trade in the Portch and buy a MercedesPorsche?!!

Cheers!!

Phil

Nearly traded the "portch" for a SLK, the sales guy seemed to think it quicker than the "portch" so i took him out in it to prove the point. Didnt welcome the damp patch afterwards on the passenger seat mind.
But decided against the SLK because the interior build was the same as the A class CRAP.  Nice car to drive though, just needed more horses possibly 200 would make a difference.

The Carrera 2 is a fantastic car! But there is one component that fails all too regularly (and not just on the Porker) - The driver!!

The difference between a "fast" car and a "faster" one has to begin and end with the guy behind the wheel?!

Interesting to note that the first modification made to Police cars is training the driver, then the brakes are up-rated, whereas most modified cars start at the engine...

Good to see that you expect the Merc to be reliable as it approaches its 30th birthday (so you should!), shame that it's not good as you'd hope?

I'm left in no doubt that Porsche engineering is top-notch, but given the that I saw 3 Boxters that had travelled backwards through hedges last year, I can't help but think the driver is always the weakest link. (I ran a mid-engined car for 3 years - they really corner like nothing else, but when they let go...  ... you become a passenger!!!).

Couldnt agree more with everything youve said, I dont profess to be a skillful driver and without proper tuition never will be, the point really is drive to youre own limits and the laws and be safe.

The merc is in need of some TLC, i bought the car as a none runner, faults with the LT circuit, the prev owner removed most things electrical and then refitted them incorrectly, then needed very little to get it through the MOT.
The metal is fairly solid in most places so come the spring time i might tackle a full repaint and sort the interior, Incidentally my father bought an 86 230 saloon and has maintained the car regardless or cost. It has some 330k on the clock and he will not replace it. But when he saw my CE he wouldnt leave it a lone.
So i think theres a little something about Mercs thats once they get under your skin theyve got you hooked.

Regards

Jib
Ps phil mail me pics of your merc if you like, could put them on the web if you like.(sad)

Couldn't help but notice that Jibby places his 1993 Cavalier above his Porsche and Benz.

Jibby, doesn't Opel/Vauxhall have a forum where you can compare your Porsche against their finest Astra Belmont GTE?

This forum is for discussing Mercedes.

Best Regards.

For anyone who had broadband or a little time on their hands , this video clip of a 911 turbo getting away from a police car is rather amusing ....   :)

Jibby.

Thank you for your offer, but i have driven several 911's, and  i really feel that for the money the base car, (VW Beetle) is better value. With reagards to going out for a spin, thanks, but no thanks, my old Nissan Micra was also capable of 70mph.

I too am as sad as R10, i visted your site,  there were a few items that i found of particular interest.

1) I especially liked the dogs in front of the garage, though not the one with wheels!!

2) The interesting pictures of your house, i'm sure all the burglars in your area,  will be most grateful to you for publishing to the entire world what you possess, it will save them so much time!!

Hi all,

It been a very amusing read. But back to the roof. If you take it off (thats if your serious about ruining your vehicle) The first bump you come to it will fold in half.

You see, you need the roof to stregthen the car.

Andy.

Saw that happen in front of my very eyes on Southend seafront several years ago. It was an escort mind you, however, not a pretty sight.

And as for the Porsche Vs Merc argument, i personally think they are far too different to compare. both high quality German cars of course, but as a rule, Porsche means performance, where Mercedes is quality and Luxury.

anyone else agree?
