Am I right in saying you car has the M111- 16 valve engine, if so it is covered pretty well by Haynes manual 3511 for the 1993-2000 w202,C-class.

Whereabouts in the country are you? Do you know how to open the bonnet up so it's vertical?

It'll be quite a lot lighter than a 6-pot cylinder head but it'll probably still take 2 of you to lift it. AFAIK you'll need to break the timing chain & remove both cams to get the head off so proceed with lots of care

You can get by-the-day access to the Mercedes WIS system to download all the information you need. I'd start there and do a couple of days reading & planning before getting stuck in. I'd also check the lead time on the cylinder head gasket & stretch bolts from Mercedes and also find out how long a machine shop will take to pressure-test & skim the head before you refit it

Having recently done a gasket change on a 111 engine it is not necessary to break the chain to remove the cams. If you undo the center bolt from the inlet cam advance mech it comes to pieces. Undo the three bolts holding the timing chain gear and remove the gear. Undo the three bolts holding the exhaust cam chain wheel and remove. Important, set the engine at 20 degrees BTDC before removing the cams. Once the cams are off then holding the chain move the engine back to TDC. Get two 4mm pins for re assembly as there are two holes in the back of the gear wheel carriers on the cams. One in each. These pins should be inserted in these holes and the cams moved so that they lodge against the cyl head. The manual says that you should remove the inlet manifold with the head. Don't. Undo the manifold and pull off, its a hell of a lot easier.
