DA pads

As a Christmas present I received a cordless Ryobi one+ DA polisher which takes 125mm pads.

Anyone have any recommendations for pads to use that won't break the bank?

I'm guessing I'll need a few sets as well?

I only use Rupes, see other buy other cheap brands and they just fall apart. When you do a job with polishing you want the best result and saving some few bucks will just make other problems, you get what you pay for! If have well scratch parts on car you need atleast 3 different grades, if its only small washing scratches you need only medium fine and the same with the polish compound i use Rupes and its superb easy to work with and little dust. Just dont overfill everything with compound its enough with 3 small dots on pad at the time. I dont know this machine but i guess its not doing much other than spin in circle, be careful not to stay in one place to long and dont press hard down. There is a fine line here before the paint can be destroyed. Rupes is oscillating so its easier to work with and not so easy do damage to paint. Check out some videos on tube before you start, alot of pro people have done it with explaining. Remember to get best resultat you must start with a clean car and no its not only fast wash and then start, a really clean car dont make dirt on pad, a good pad you can use 2 times before it starts to be poor quality. And speed is very importan, dont just hurry in full speed, you start low when starting up and when the compound is out in a layer you speed up, do only small areas every step.

I've always used Chemical Guys Hex Logic with my DAS6, very good for my needs and long lasting.

Orange for heavy scratches, green for intermediate and white for finishing. One of each will do you for a good while Alistair, no need to be stockpiling them, I just rinse them out in warm water after use and air dry them . As for polish, I have loads of options though currently giving THIS SONAX one a go. I must admit to being impressed with it so far.

Other sources are available as well as my links, though I've had no issues with "Clean Your Car" over many years of obsessing with bodywork

I’ve got and used the ones mentioned above plus a few others like 3M.

I have the same ryobi polisher too with a 5ah battery as it’s handy for light jobs and avoids cables but, I mainly use it for finishing up jobs like final polish/wax, for which it works very well.

I can’t help but think something like a light cut pad and a few finishing pads will serve you fine. If you get deeper into it then yes experiment with pads, compounds but it will never match a rotary.

Seems ok for beginner use, if you have enough battery its ok but cant compare to the Rupees, its like MB and LADA For many people the job he did here is very good and they are happy, for me thats not good at all, if the hood was black you would see what iam talking about. Remember the first step is the most importan in polishing, you cant expect to get a perfect finish if you dont remove the heavy scratches from start. What happens is that you just cover up swirls and scratches with polish compound and wax, after a few washes its all back. Sometimes it need use of wet sanding 3000 with machine from start, its all what level you want in the end and what you are satisfied with. Its not a 1 hour job, i use several days for a perfect finish with the finish product sealer on.

I'm not a fanatic about it and have 5 batteries and two or three chargers so battery life isn't an issue.

He does seem to like it so I'm good. Just need to get a few extra pads and go from there.

Great, just remember start with a small area and get the feeling and result you want, maybe choose a place on car thats not the most visible if you fail, the hood is not fun to make mistakes on. Never do a job in sun or the hood when its still warm, good luck!

Been doing a bit of research on this as I got a Dewalt cordless DA at Christmas , the Maguire’s pads seem to get top marks but I’ve found Rupes set on flea bay for £25 and also a chemical guys set for £29 both these have received good and bad reviews. I also looked at the carbon collective pads which seem good but are currently out of stock. I’m currently using Maguire’s on my corded DA and they are very user friendly and last a good while with good results.

Well i dont know what research you refer to or if it is worthless ebay feedback, i have been doing this for many years and never had any problems with Rupes products and if you check out the pads they have a nice advantage with the edge, helps you come into places other pads dont because you spindel will hit like around mirrors etc.. I recomend try different and you will found out what is best, its not a + with a pad that last long time because a rinse under water will never remove all small particles, this is all about beeing like new or you have another grade on the polish like a sandpaper. Another importan factor is how the pad distribute the heat in high rpm, a cheap pad can burn straight into paint, its only straight thru solid foam.
