they pay me or me pay them? It'll stop me using my car for work purposes, I'll just use it to get there. If they need me anywhere urgently, it's stump up the charge, and the usual mileage rate, or get me a taxi/limo/bus or I'm not going.

I think it' ridiculous. It's expensive enough already in this country when it comes to the price of fuel, just compare our prices to those in the states.

I also think they should get rid of those stupid bus lanes, what a waste of space they are. I know all areas are different, but where I live most of the buses you see are pretty empty. The only people that use them are kids going to school and oap's. When my mum comes on the bus to visit me she is often the only person on a 40 minute bus journey. What a waste of money when the average bus only does about 7 miles to the gallon!

Yes - we already pay more per litre than they pay per gallon in the States (OK a US gallon is a todge smaller - who cares).

Don't forget the governments statement "we will be able to reduce fuel duty and road fund licence if this is phased in"... Yeah right... Just how stupid do they think people are??... Don't answer that !!

Aktually...

If petrol is halfed in price and you then pay per mile, it will just encorage people to buy big cars.

With road tax being free, it will be cheaper than before to own two cars...you can only drive one at a time though, but you may as well have two.

Darlings idea would save me a fortune, most of my driving is to and from work and I can claim this as an expense (I already do), I wouldn't have pay two lots of road tax and I can drive a lot faster as i don't have to worry about fuel consumption so much.

In my opinion it will be like big brother watching you or more so travelling with you. They would know where you are, where you have been and what route you took. If we pay per mile you will have to take into account the price per mile + the cost of fuel. I can't see anyone wanting to pay £50 to travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh on milage charges + the cost of there fuel.

dont forget the other downsides to this gps tracking lark. Apart from tracking your movements everywhere you go they can also track your speed and compare it to the speed limit for the road your on - and then issue automatic fines and penaltly points !

If you get your car recovered by truck from lands end to John O'Groats then do you both pay the mileage charge?

What will the going rate be on the black market for disabling devices I wonder?

A good side to the gps would be if your car was stolen they would be able to track it straight away. But I don?t think that this will ever come around, who is going to pay for the gps and install it on second hand cars. The government will miss the revenue from the road tax as they collect it in lump sums at least twice a year. Can you honestly see people getting travelling expenses for doing 18000miles per year, what will taxi drivers have to charge there passengers.

are you just talking about congestion in inner cities or motorways,or all ?....................public transport is a joke............ buses costs more per mile than my car over a year, trains dont even go there if you need to get one in a hurry unless you have a bank loan.................the only transport service that actually gets anywhere near being a decent service..........london underground............which they are running into the ground and wont modernise it.......................motorways,seen a great idea in europe, between certain times or in certain places, wagons aren't allowed to overtake each other, saves sitting behind one overtaking the other for 15 miles coz he going 5 kph faster

Come the revolution

Fixing congestion is easy, but dimwit Darling, Smarmy Blair and thief Brown couldn't spot a good iea if it smacked them on the head shouting "I'm a good idea!"
1) Freight on rail - Most motorways have 3 lanes - 2 for trucks to overtake each other and 1 single carriageway for cars. No truck may enter the middle lane of a motorway between the hours of 7am and 10am. Also, minumum speed limit on the inside lane - 55mph so they don't all get stuck behind a 10mph crane.

2) We are a sevice economy apparently. That means most people (including me) work via cellphone, computer and email. So, why the hell am i travelling 100 miles a day when I have a 2Mb internet link in my house? (and a crap one in the office) And I work for the bleeding government !
JB LAW - All firms with more than 75 employees must allow working from home, a minimum of 2-3 days a week unless they can show good reason not to (e.g. Tesco!). - Immediate 50% reduction in commuter traffic.

Oh - and anyone want a small metal plate that blocks out GPS signals? - Wow how hard was that to stop their silly technology from working!
My TomTom often puts me on the wrong road so how are they going to tell where you are anyway.

Having spent time in government IT, I am staggered any of it works. Most staff are unmotivated, unprofessional and generally unskilled. Most system limp from crisis to crisis. I'm taking it pretty easy and I still keep getting told that my standards are too high.

I'd struggle to make such a complex system work and I run rings round the fine arts graduates that would be hired to design such a piece of engineering.

End result - no chance.

Grrrrrrr (I don't like the idea - can you tell?)

What have the Germans ever done for us? Aktually, they have some pretty good ideas on motoring, like you ae not aloud to take a caravan on the road on holiday weekends.

The speed limit system on motorways is also good, flat out if the road is dry. it means that if you get held up you don't have to drive like a loony through the towns...just on the motoroway.

I'll bet the long distance Taxi / truck drivers are dreading it.

This will cause an all time jam up from our commercial trucks & coaches & probably the agricultural community.

This government has never admitted they got it wrong since the last time they tried to hike up Deisel, when the farmers blockaded the petrol refineries & almost brought this country to its knees, but instead tried to waffle thier way out of it & reduced the hike at the next budget.

If our tax discs are to be phased out, I bet they've no intention of dropping the commercials already overburdened side.

Just my gripe ... AHHH All better Now.
