probably

the rheostat has burnt out. It's in the instrument cluster, controlled by the small rotary knob which you use to dim the lights. Try Mercman or one of the other breakers to see if they have one separately

I am sure that the consul lamps do not dim, only the instrument panel. If this is the case it is not the dimmer.

Most earlier mercs have a built in fuse on the instrument cluster it nominally sits at the rear of the fuel & temp gauges like a small dashboard light holder coloured red which is the fuse
Hope this helps eliminating things

Before we jump on replacing the rheostat (which could well be the right answer), has Alan tried just turning it up? Its amazing how many people don't know the rheostat is there and inadvertantly turn it down whilst resetting the trip meter. Then spend hours trying to figure out why their dash lights don't work any more. If its just carboned up a bit, a simple twiddle may do the trick, at least in the short term.
