Anyone know what he top speed of a de-restricted C43 would be?

I saw a claim of 170 mph on another site but that seems optimistic.

When I bought mine I was told that it had been de-restricted. Unfortunately I lack the bottle and a suitable road to test it out.

I guess you could find a potential top speed by noting revs in top gear at 40mph, 50mph etc and then working out what the speed it would be doing at the red line, and then work back a little by judging how many revs you think it could actually pull in top gear. Or by just looking up the gear ratios.

Hmmmm...

Think I might try this myself. Would be interesting to compare notes.

I'd be surprised if it'd go to 170mph as acceleration starts to drop off at, ahem, quite a bit below that.

Yes 170mph sounds too much. You need vast additional power to get through each additional 5mph - wind resistance increases with the square of speed or something.

Without comparing drag coefficients and frontal areas car with 200-odd bhp seem to get into the 140's. My original Nissan 200SX (200bhp) had a vmax of 145. My 240bhp Nissan 200SX would (apparently) do a bit more - I guess it would get into the low 150's.

So based on that unscientific analysis I would say that the C43 would get to about 160mph.

Sounds about right for absolute tops. Also explains why they limit them to 150 odd - in reality they can't get them to go that much faster anyway.

I remember reports of when they (the bike manufaturers are 'they' this time) were trying to get a production bike through the 170mph mark and it took a lot of doing and in the end a lot of work in the wind tunnel - as you say wind resistance at that speed is phenominal. Lots of bikes were just about getting up to the late 160's but the power hikes weren't quite enough to get the extra few mph's.

And a C43 isn't exactly the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road.

My wife's got a Saab 95 Aero (stonking mid range pull - the car not my wife). I'll see if I can persuade her to see what that'll do, in the interest of science.

What we really need is a traffic policeman; never there when you need them...

you could arrange to go to a track day and see if anyone has brought with them precise timing equipement. bolt it on and off you go and find out.

or....go to a engine tuners that has a rolling road....get the car on and you will find out its top speed. you might have to pay them for the time but they will do it for you. they use rolling roads when tuning ECU's and stuff for those who insist on proper full on tuning. you can also find out how your car is running.....probably get on one for under £200.

I've done a few track days on my bike and haven't got near the top speed - never tried one in a car though but can't imagine that I'd get the car to its top speed either as not enough room. Not being any sort of motor racing hero, you understand.

Rolling road should allow the car to get to max revs in top therefore could save £200 and work it out on paper. It can't allow for wind resistance though so will not give a true achievable top speed reading.

A long stretch of autobahn is called for here. Anyone got a spare long stretch of autobahn handy?

Ah yes - that reminds me to book that elusive driving holiday to Italy via France, Germany and Switzerland.......

I'll keep trying to persuade my wife......new tyres going on tomorrow, timing is perfect.

Why does this logic not work on the female of the species?

go via the nurburgring

it gives you the following options.

1)fast as you can scare yourself witless track driving with loads of other users clogging up the road, and you get overtaken by a lady in a transit van.
2) all of the above, but overtaken by a lady in a transit van blocking a fat fool in a red SL, while his co-driver says this bit isn't on the route we planned.
3) our missuses go shopping in Nurnburg for lebkuchen and spicy bratwurst while you and I try to overtake the lady in the transit van.

This was posted on another forum, by one of our mainland European members.

One owner with a C43 estate has seen 169mph, verified by a GPS device.

Another C43 owner, whose car has been derestricted by AMG:

"300kph = 186mph, However considering speedo inaccuracies, around 180mph should be possible."
