Your Mercedes
190E 1.8 1990 M102
Good evening,
so in my spare time I began the restoration of the 190E 1.8
Naturally I started with what I would need most, at least if, after having secured it, I felt like taking a stroll around the little hill roads where I live in Settignano Florence Italy.
I started with the fan which is part of the Diavia system (air conditioning, air conditioning) which the 190 is supplied with.
Here too I found myself surprised by something not original from Mercedes...
There is a nice blue booklet accompanying the car documentation with nice DIAVIA writing.
In short, after having found various tutorials on the subject on YouTube, I begin to dismantle everything on the engine side under the windshield that does not allow me to reach the double diavia fan; there is a metal bulkhead crossed by a myriad of pipes and wires that DOES NOT allow the disassembly of a sort of plastic cover marked DIAVIA held blocked by two spring clips opposite each other, after numerous attempts and various curses I end up taking this cover off and finally see the double fan.
Naturally it is not possible to remove the bulkhead completely because all these services pass through it.
So as I was saying after several attempts I managed to remove the cover, and surprise! the fan is mounted horizontally and it is impossible to reach the opportunity to disassemble it due to the presence of the famous bulkhead which perhaps, if I manage to remove, would give me the space to be able to try to remove it!
Looking at the various tutorials on the W124 (my father's car in the good old days), to dismantle the fan there is an easily removable bulkhead from above and by doing so it is possible to change the fan in 5 minutes... I suspect that this simple system air conditioner is not Diavia, but original Mercedes...
I won't tell you the condition of the double fan, absolutely blocked and full of oxide.
I tried to pry on the plastic flaps, but I immediately gave up for fear of damaging them as everything was blocked!
Now I wonder if anyone has had to deal with this problem, and if there is a strategy for dismantling the double fan, which is also easily available on the web and costs around a hundred euros.
The model is produced by a certain SPAL in northern Italy.
The official alternative would be to dismantle from the inside all the ambaradan that is part of the climate system, but after more than thirty years having to remove the plastic components of the system gives me a headache...
If, however, I could proceed from the engine compartment it would be much simpler and then move on to rehabilitate the air conditioning system with the gas refill that can now be used after the appropriate modifications.
If there was any saint who could give me some advice on this matter I would be more than happy.
I thank you for the courtesy of those who wasted their time reading my complaints.
Alex
