So 'her indoors' '52 C220CDI got stuck in second gear and limped into MBS in Exeter who pronounced the Transmission ECU dead. Apparently it got contaminated with transmission oil and is giving a permanent error code.

Replacing the ECU was the brain numbing cost of £800+ so, what to do?

a) Source one from a breaker - Dronsfield has none - any other suggestions?
b) Repair the ECU - can anyone suggest a reliable and honest ECU repairer who could fix and not fiddle?

Hoping the answer is out there!

I know MBS in Exeter. All you need to do is to wash the ECU out with lighter fuel and dry it,, there is never anything wrong with the ECU, the wiring harness must be replaced and the car will be fine.

This has been the case with every gearbox oil post that has been up here and elsewhere, probably about 40 cars

Its more likely the conductor plate or speed sensor fault, not the ecu. As malcolm said just clean that out. the oil shouldnt cause a problem

The wiring harness can be washed clean as well ..just replace the wiring loom seals at the gearbox... an easy fix...

Happy ending

Further to this small saga - it was the ECU - MBS say they had tried all the other causes suggested above so were pretty certain though they had been caught out in the past. So top marks to MBS.

I eventually found a new ECU for £140 (inc postage) from a supplier on eBay in Germany. Ebay seller name Fiesta K1. The ECU was uncoded and brand new.

So her indoors is happy.

Well that was unlucky but not so bad in the end.

Boys and girls ..

If anyone needs an ECU repaired then ping me an e-mail in private with the ECU markings. I will undertake repair for a fixed £50.00 fee (to cover postage and diagnostics), and will quote you a pre-agreed repair cost which you can take or leave.

On all cases, bar none, where repair is possible/feasible, you save a minimum 50% on Merc cost.

Also available are brand-new OEM drop-in replacement ECUs, with a full 12-month guarantee. Priced individually, with cost savings as much as 75%.

Before anyone bites my head off, I run this as a business, but also in it for the buzz I get out of automotive electronics.

Also able to repair most, if not all, automotive electronic components including dash, alam/immobilisers, key coading ...etc. P/Ex on all parts.

All the best ..
