I need to replace my horrible decrepid fallin appart at the seams petrol Vectra Auto and have decided on an MB, having had an 300E before and been bitten by the bug.

I had toyed with the idea of getting another petrol auto and getting a gas conversion as I do quite a few miles. But from the forum this seems to be a general no no!

Then I notice that MB do a diesel auto, can anyone give me some general advice on these reliability, fuel consumption, service intervals etc as my knowledge is zilch. I have been looking at E Class.

Cheers

Good Choice, welcome to our planet!

Reliability is always great with any MB. E Class Specific, i think the only major reoccurring thing is the issue of stonechips on the newer models. Mercedes changed to using water based paints instead of spirit based recently. This makes the paint a little weaker. Therefore there are a lot of members here that have had bonnets resprayed...

I think Service intervals are about 12000 on most CDI engines. Someone correct me if im wrong..
If youre looking at second hand then there will usually be no difference in the condition of the engine whether its done 20 or 120 thousand miles, but look for a comprehensive history.

All Mercs are better as Auto's, Manuals are rarer and will be harder to sell in the future.

You have choice of 220, 270 and 320 CDI models. I personally think the 220 would be too underpowered for an E Class, but the most economical.

The 270 is very powerful and still economical.

Remember that MB always tend to overstate the economy. I think we have proved here that the autos do a lot less MPG than what MB think they do...

E diesels are great!

I don't know what age car you are considering but if new the 220 should be sufficient as the power is now 150 Bhp. All larger engines are additional fun in bucket-loads.

Mpg should be about 40 for a 270 auto, a bit better for a 220 and a bit worse for a 320.

If an older car is being considered the 220 is ok for general driving but if you want extra go you need the 320 Cdi or the E300 turbo. Fuel consumption should be about 33 for 300 turbo, 36 for 320cdi and 40ish for 220cdi.

Both performance and economy should be better than your vectra.

Service intervals should fall at near 15k for the 300 Turbo, and about 20k for all the cdi engined cars, depending on type of use.

I never get more than 25mpg out of my E300td

Presumably you don't only do town work or race every boy racer in sight.

Check that the gear selecter is in D not 4 as it wont engage fifth if it isn't.

In nearly three years I have averaged 33mpg.

I have a E300turbo diesel estate. Goes like stink. 40 ish on m'way at 90+
In town upper 20's - I am heavy footed, its got ac and auto box.

Expect to pay a premium for a good one as cab drivers go for the diesel.

problems - not much - blew a glow plug, replaced all 6 for about £300 - done by MB dealer

Main gripe - lousy service at MB dealers - nothing's changed in this regard for the past 15 years. I suspect they have too much biz, the engineers are rushed and do a lousy job, expect to return on three or four ocassions to get it put right. Mind you they make a charge if you wipe your feet on the door mat.

:D :) :( :x

yep, its like that

No I take it easy, even on a run it never tops 26.

Something is not right with the engine.

Could be glow plug but then it should be apparent

MB serviced?

Autobox? S or W selected?

I've got a C250TD ('99). I've only had it about a month and I can only seem to get 30/31 mpg out of it which is a bit disappointing....
