I will stick my neck out and say that rather than laying out the price of a cleaner every few thousand miles, you are better off buying diesel with detergent additives (i.e major brand, not from Supermarket) and avoiding a lot of gunk build up in the first place.

Also, try your car on the "super" diesels - some models have enough of a MPG increase to make the move worthwhile (and you get to fill up slightly less often).

I have a regular trip from he Midlands to Stoke Poges that is very boring and predictable - the "super" diesel consistently gives me 3-4MPG more than standard in my E280CDI.

well BP ultimate diesel is always expensive but heard good reviews about it. shell super diesel (i think they call it) is also good not sure how people can judge the difference based on driving but i be intrested to know people who claim they see a difference?

maybe some home mechanics can see the difference when they strip parts of the engine? but average joe like me probably not notice a difference.

If the injectors gum up and stop misting the fuel then anyone will notice. What happens is that the fuel is sprayed in a jet into the cylinder. This damages the cylinder wall, loss of compression and no power at all is the result. VAG have had a serious issue with this happening to some of their diesel engines.

Best Diesel fuel cleaner is Forte around £15.00 ask any hackney driver as they put this in before thier taxi test as it reduces the smoke emmisions. i use it in my 190D once a year and @ 145,000mls the injectors have never been overhauled and the car runs fine with no smoke.

To drive, and in terms of economy I really can't tell the difference. Sometimes it even feels more lively with the ordinary stuff in! I had the same problem with super plus unleaded. If it made a difference on my old E240, it was so subtle I couldn't see it.
However, at an extra 5p/l for 70l at fill up, I am looking at an extra £3.50 every 2nd or 3rd fill up. Not a vast amount if it does what it says on the tin and keeps the fuel system clean, shiny and efficient.

With the old Pajero, the diseasal choice made a world of difference. The motorway hills near the Alps will tell you all you need to know about the diesel in your beasty. Texaco Diseasal, max 60 uphill (2.8 TD, not common rail diesel) BP or Shell, would sit at 80 more than happily. Even the Local fuel down there was better than the supermarket fuel here. (Thick gloopy stuff)

I got hacked off with Sainsburys as I had to had the pump reset after 6 minutes and pay for two loads of fuel as the diesel from there was so foamy that to fill the 90l tank, it took ages as you had to keep cutting the flow to stop the bubble overflowing. I'll now make a 16m detour to get Shell or BP (Will get Esso as well) rather than put supermarket fuel in. The ML has not had the chance to try bad fuel yet....

As for the BP "Extra" diesel, Yes it gave the Paj loads more kick, and maybe. just maybe if you didn't suddenly decide to use that extra kick, you may get extra MPG (Used to get ~30 - 40m extra on 3/4 tank - ~75l), but at the moment it's 6p / L more here so I filled up the ML using the standard BP diesel. Seeing as I have had the beast nearly 2 weeks, she's only had 2 tanks so far, one of Shell and one of BP and got ~ 350 miles out of 3/4 tank from the shell.

Putting decent fuel in the Jeep makes it dangerous... 4l with Mud tyres and only 2WD on road (transfer box, not center Diff on a Wrangler) makes for interesting driving in the wet. So that tends to get supermarket fuel most the time with occasional fills of decent stuff to keep her cleaner. Also use Redex on her if she's not had good fuel for a while. (A tank tends to stay in for ~ 1 - 2 months so tends to be old fuel too)

its intresting as i am not always keen on supermarket diesel/petrol but i heard rumours its the same petrol that is distributed to the well known petrol stations (shell, bp, esso etc) as they fill up at same oil refinery in their branded tankers and on to there petrol stations. not sure if this is true but hey its another pub story u hear :)

sorry forgot to note... has anybody actually noticed a difference in older cars? <2000 as i have a personal suspicion to appreciate all the great stuff they put into the diesel you need a recent diesel engine to take advantage of it. COme on i doubt shell, BP are going to test their diesel on test cars from 1993 190E's are they most likely choose new cars and make the claim on that

When the truck turns up to a Distribution centre, the distribution center will have tanks of the aditive by supplier. the driver keys in a code and his tanker is filled with the appropriate "MIX" the fuel quality itself is usually the same, it's the aditives you pay the extra for. Supermarket fuel = no aditives = no storage charges etc etc. That is my understanding of how it works from one of the tanker drivers I spoke to on a Paj forum before.

wow thanks for that insight, i suppose to make it worthwhile shell, BP need to sell more of the diesel/petrol to make it worthwhile otherwise the adding of additives and storage is not that much cost effective.

hmm... i think i might try the "super fuel" when i run empty to give it a try
first i will try shell and let you guys know if i notice anything

i put in shell diesel extra (after using asda diesel for 1 month) i have had 2 full tanks and guys i hate to say this.... but the car is MORE responsive!! seems more springy :D i dnt have stats i am just going on feel but i also open to people thinking its "in my head" but guys i DEFINATLY see a difference...fuel economy i have not been monitoring :p

the car seems to be more faster so i suppose i will continue with the "super fuels" rather then the supermarket fuels
