Hi,

This is my first thread on here :D, please can someone help me, I'm am about to change the engine in my spare car and I'm looking at a Diesel, some thing about 3.0 ltrs, instead of a Bigger petrol one, at the mo it's running a 2.0 ltr 16v petrol, what I would like to know is, if I had a 3.2 ltr Common Rail Diesel, say from a 2005 C-Class, what else will I need to run this engine. The car in question is a Merlin Roadster, before anyone says "alot of money (etc etc) I've heard them all before, I made the mistake of joinning and asking the same sort of question on a BMW Owners Forum and I got lots of silly people given lots of silly answers  like "it can't be done or why do you want too, lots of money, it will not fit".
So I have ruled out a BMW 3.0 ltr Diesel, partly because of the lenght and partly because of the People on the Forum. As for things like the Gearbox, I have a 6 speed manual lined up, the bellhousing will be modi to fit which ever engine I end up with. Suspension is 2-1/4" coilovers, so no prob's there, as with the diff it will handle over 600 bhp with no prob's.

Many thanks
David

I guess you'll need the ecu for the engine, wiring loom, exhaust manifold, fuel pump.

An interesting project, it should pull very well :D

Although the 320 diesel (inline 6) should be easier to find, I think you will find the new V6 320 is a much better engine. Depends on how much you are willing to spend or what you're needs are? Make sure you have some form off traction control as the torque output is rather high!

What about things like the ignition keys, the reason I ask is that I've looked it to an Audi 3.0 TDi and you need also the keys and the dash panel, because of the way they do the alarm system, all of the bits talk to each other etc :( I want a V6 engine instead of a inline engine.

"Make sure you have some form off traction control as the torque output is rather high" that makes for more fun

Mmm! You raise a good point there. The EIS is a major gateway for a lot of the car's (MB) systems. The car's electronics are very complex and integrated.

I am sure others with far greater understanding around this will be along shortly!

You could get a 3rd party ECU custom made?
It is very common now for keys, ECU's, stereos etc all to be linked to prevent theft of the car or its components.

Mercedes do not use a normal key, but an infra red electronic thing that looks like a key.

The EIS rolls the codes EVERY Time you shut off the car so its VERY Hard to jack the codes for the EIS.

I think the simplest way would be to use custom (ie non-MB) engine management. That way you wouldn't have to integrate all the MB stuff into the car

I didn't think that anybody does custom engine management systems for Diesel engines , yes for petrol but Diesel

What's the difference? There's a 3D fuel / air / timing map and a bunch of sensors. One engine uses diesel, the other petrol

I can't believe the VW (& etc) Paris - Dakar cars use factory ECUs. I expect they;re running MOTEC or equivalent

This means electronic Ignition Switch, this was followed by DAS switch Drive Authorize system, and there are 3 versions of this

Just a thought but there are plenty of Alfa 3.0 petrol engines knocking around for not a lot of money :)

A diesel engine in a roadster will be a heavy old lump, although the acceleration would be impressive :)

I looked at a 606 Multivalve engine the other day and thought that, with six straight pipes bolted straight to the head, it'd make a great hotrod engine or an off-the-wall engine for a period special. All it needs is a fuel supply and two electrical feeds and it'll run. It'd make a great noise on open pipes as well!

There's no disputing it's a bit of a boat anchor, though

I think it's really important to do stuff like this. Diesel still has a lot of development in it even though people like Ricardo, Mercedes and Volkswagen have done lots of work already

I like the video of the mad Scandewegians with their turbo Mercedes...
